A miata would be a great car for DD as long as you don't need to haul anything or take more than one other person anywhere.

I'd stay away from the MX-3 unless it's a 4 cylinder model... the V6 MX3 was a PAIN to work on.

That really applies to any car with a V6. Stick with a 4 cylinder... cheaper to maintain and easier to work on (which means also cheaper to fix). Also, stay away from domestic cars and european cars. They're usually more expensive to fix and harder to work on.

There's a ton of asian imports out there that fit the bill... it just depends on what you like and what's around when you're looking.

You'd be surprised how much stuff you can haul in a small car like a Miata. I had over $300 worth of groceries in mine once... And honestly, I think it comes down to this: how much gas can you buy for $xxxx that you were planning on spending on a newer car? That argument has ALWAYS won out in my book when it comes to buying less fuel efficient cars.

As for modding a Miata, while the temptation was always there, it was never strong enough for me to bother. I bought the stickiest tires I could live with (and afford), got it aligned to FM's specs, and was happy from there on, even on stock suspension. I suspect that a good alignment and good tires are enough to satisfy even the most dedicated of casual canyon carvers. ;)

I understand the Honda argument but to be honest I'm not big on Honda. Preludes are nice but the only Honda I REALLY like is the Honda S2000. But who doesn't? lol

Honda and RWD are a good combo... I'd love an S2000, but I refuse to pay that much when I can build a Miata for 2/3 of the cost that will blow the doors off the S2000 in stock form. Hell, for an AP2 S2000, you're getting into the territory where a cammed LS3 Miata would be priced.
