No r134 will not work in place of r12. Well it will but not for very long. But you can retrofit it to r134.

Jetlock: sorry just moved to Arizona from Washington so for me its already HOT!

Hvyman: why wont it work for long? Too thin it leaks out? Also looked up the retrofit but I just moved here and I dont have any tools and i'm not about to pay those bastards the money they want to do it.

Well im about to do a retrofit on one of the members cars here properly and im considering a write up as i do it for the DIYers out there. So if you have the money to buy all the new parts needed for it to work well you could follow my guide.

The AC questions always seem to start in April. Do you even know why it doesn't work?

Just so I understand this: you're in Arizona, don't have tools (or AC knowledge from the sound of it), and aren't going to pay someone who has both. Good luck with that. I see profuse sweating in your future.

It's possible to retrofit 134. Toyota even published a service bulletin that has every step. I'd post it if I knew how. It's not rocket science but for the performance you're going to need it must be done right. If I were you I'd stick with R12.

Well I may not have much ac knowledge, which is correct but I refuse to pay 800 dollars for a retrofit. I'd rather do it myself even if it costs more.

Its well under that provided you can get your hands on a set of manifold gauges and a vacuum pump. Harbor Frieght carries some cheap sets if youre on a budget.

Having the proper tools is easy, understanding how to use them is usually the issue.

Combining r12 and r134a will cause them to freeze up. Your evap will turn into a ice block.

No... The issue is you'll get black death (i.e. compressor death that screws over the rest of the system quite badly)

But if you do it wrong you don't have a warranty, and you're left with even more cost...

Yes? Do I need to prove this to you or something? Please let me know if I do, I'm sure my HVAC instructor wont mind another experiment like this, since its happened once already.

Normally I'm not part of the search police but we go through this every year. Not to mention by dint of reading this you must be connected to the greatest source of information civilization has ever known. It's much more than a global pornography network you know...
