My 87 was very similar, and I drove it for over a year. If I stayed out of boost, I didn't need to add water for about a week. If I ran it hard, water was needed daily. I had nothing else to drive, and only worked a mile from the house. I was working on getting my 90 going, so I decided to keep driving it til it got worse. I knew what I was doing was WRONG, and had to keep going, and I just realized when it quit, I would replace the entire motor. It did fine for a YEAR, and I had a couple of 1/8 mile type races (never got beat). It didn't give out until I had it pressure tested. I was sure it was head, but the mechanic that diagnosed my bad CPS argued with me. I let him test it, and he claimed it was OK. 3 days later that motor emptied the radiator out the tail pipe. New motor is coming now.

What do you mean by water? Do you put water for engine coolant?? lol

You'll be just fine using water. (Especially if you are losing as much as you say you are). If you've been spending all that money on 50/50...Ouch to the wallet.

NO, plenty will go wrong if you use water and water alone for any extended period of time.

what worries me is

i checked two hoses and they both were fine..
There's more than two hoses on this car. There are two notorious hoses, but there are a total of like 8 heater hoses IIRC.
Make sure the small 90* one at the back of the head isn't leaking and the small 90* one at the rear of the water pump isn't leaking as well.

However, I suggest you do a leakdown and compression test to find out if it is indeed a BHG. You're in CT, I noticed, and you're in luck. There are plenty of Supra owners near you that would be happy to help I'd imagine (I'd hope, anyway).

There was a period of about 4 days where I ran off nothing but distilled water because I had a massive leak and couldn't get to it without tearing stuff apart. It didn't seem to do any harm to me...:icon_conf

Well, if you live in a cold climate then it will freeze at 32* and it will boil on a warm day, after you shut the motor off, easier then a mix would.

The 3-4 day period that I did run it was from school and back home and probably 55 degree weather. I wasn't "cruising" or racing or anything like that...Just a 5 minute drive here and back.

I would think distilled water would be too "clean" for the inside of an engine... Wouldn't distilled water eventually lead to some problems caused by erosion or something along those lines?

Just curious, and would like to know whether or not it would.

Hmm...Well the only reason I ran distilled water for the time being was because I was too cautious of getting too many dirty bacteria and stuff in my car...I didn't really look at it from that point of view...

True. I edited my post to contain my original meaning.
"extended period of time"

hehe. Okay. Don't think I wasn't cautious while driving it w/ just water...but it was so little driving that I wasn't too worried about it and I didn't experience any problems at the moment. I getcha' though.
