I need to replace my starter on my 89 so I bought a 91 starter thinking that I can take advantage of the threaded holes on the 91+ starters. I took it to my mechanic last week because I didn't feel like tackling the top PITA bolt on the old starter. He looked at it and thinks that the top bolt on my starter is actually a stud and not a nut/bolt combo. I can't recall if it is and checking the TSRM and EPC don't seem to indicate that it's a stud.

Does anyone know what that top bolt is on an 89 and more importantly, can you install a 91+ starter on an 89?

correct! as usual IJ, its actually not that hard man! IIRC 14mm two wrenches i popped mine out in 5 minutes after being on the left, if i had to jack it up it would take more time to jack it up on jack stands then to pull it off and replace

Thanks guys. Yeah, I could probably take it out but I'm just a bit burned out from upgrading my suspension. I need a break from working on the car. I'll let the mechanic know that the top bolt is definitely a nut/bolt combo and not a threaded stud.
