89 ford f150 exhaust woes

Hey guys, tried posting this on a ford forum but got zero help.

I just put a new y pipe and cat on but didn't make provisions for a smog pump, thinking I'd remove it later. However, now I read a few places that the cat will clog without a pump functioning. Since quite a few cars today run without pumps, are they really necessary for keeping this new cat from clogging?

Thanks, already checked that one out. What I don't get is why most imports and a lot of domestics don't run smog pumps and don't seem to have unnatural cat clogging issues
