hey guys, just a quick question.

i have an 87 turbo 5 speed and shortly i will be buying another 7mgte from a buddy. the motor is from a 92 auto-> 5speed conversion car. im getting the harness with it and the ecu for $100 more if i need it. so the question is, do i need it?

my harness is pretty rough, but i talked to some people and they said the 87-92 connectors wont line up right in a lot of places inside the cabin so i would to cut a splice a lot.

on the other hand, my 87 harness should work with the '92 motor no problem right?

the only other thing is i will have to use my 87 mounts and dog ears right?

i just need a little point in the right direction, thanks in advance

I'd use the 87 ECU and harness, you'll need to use some sensors from the 87 engine too, as some changed connectors. (TPS, O2 sensor I believe, and others). The 92 harness won't match up to your body harness, and it's more trouble than it's worth.

Use the 87 stuff, engine brackets/mounts, harness, ECU, required sensors, etc, etc, it'll be the easiest way.

Doing a 7mgte swap is enough work to keep you busy. Don't complicate things by getting a different year harness that wont match your body harness. Stick with the same year as the body.

likely not. P/N's changed over the years, but AFAIK they should all be interchangable, sometimes older cars don't like using the newer electronics for some reason though.

the TPS is [MONSTER EDIT!!!-] NOT the same, as is the oxygen sensor. (the plug for the oxygen sensor is different color, but it still plugs right in) the AFM didnt change either.

you MUST use the 87 harness. i didnt bother changing sensors for the plugs that didnt match, i just spliced the connectors off of my old harness. works great!

it's nearly impossible to use an 89+ harness on a pre89 car. trust me, i tried :(

No it's not.

There are 2 TPS sensors.

86.5-88 N/A and 87-3/89 Turbo are the same
89-92 N/A and 3/89-92 Turbo are the same

They have different connectors.

haha, i hate you jeff. :icon_razz : (and wow did i have a brain fart, i should have remembered that when i got a new TPS for my N/A motor... ah well)

HOWEVER, just for shits and giggles- i've got an 89+ motor in my car, using an 87 wiring harness, so thats probably what led me to jump to my conclusion so fast.

WHICH MEANS that you just basically told me the exact year of my motor!

i love you JEFF! :wiggle: (and i'll edit my post so there's no misinformation)
