I was always taught a Composite HG needs a rough finish to give "teeth" to bite/hold it?

Really? I'll have to look into that. I just want to make sure that the usual pitting around the coolant jackets, and grooves from the fire rings, are removed, and that the surfaces are flat. The machine shop I use has a pretty smooth finish, but its not a mirror polish. I haven't had any problems with them so far. There is another machine shop I can use that has an old stone type cutter. It leaves a rough finish, without a doubt. I use them sometimes on old cast iron and steel heads. The finish isn't too bad then, but that stone cutter tears aluminum up pretty bad.

I just picked up another supra with an unassembled machined motor I was hoping to use.
Unfortunately it has a crack in the #2 piston water jacket where the casting divider meets the piston wall, the side with 2 water jacket holes.

Is this block trash? Would it threaten the integrity of the head gasket on a NA motor or cause piston ring problems (like flex in the combustion chamber)?
Can't believe his machine shop decked & cleaned this block and took his money knowing the block has a water jacket crack. They are either dishonest or don't care.
