Adam: Can't say 100% no one I've spoken to knows.

Your right, can't say 100%, but I can't remember a spec sheet for an alloy head that wasn't T 356 aluminum.

Magnesium is the main hardener I think. "Mag wheels" aren't magnesium at all, but aluminum doped with the magnesium to make them much harder.

What is the welch plug? I'm just curious. I've heard about it before by a neighbor mentioning something about his welch plug and losing water as it evaporates or something..... where abouts is it?

Welch plug is foreigner speak for what we call freeze plugs. They are soft and designed to pop out of the block if the coolant freezes (ice = expand). This way the block doesn't crack.

too bad "freeze plugs" won't pop out and save your block...

the real reason for them is because of the sand casting method and needing to get the sand back out of the coolant passages after casting...

I tried to explain that earlier in this thread or maybe another thread. No one listening!
There's an experiment you can do in your freezer. Fill a bottle with water and put a small hole in it. It will still expand.
