Ok, i got another 7mgte that i want to put in to replace my old one. I'm taking out the motor alone instead of motor and trans at the same time... so far, this is where i've gotton. I unbolted all the bolts, hoses, mounts, and EVERYTHING ELSE POSSIBLE like the a/c stuff, p/s stuff... the motor is basically ready to come out right? well heres the problem i'm having... I figured like the rest of the cars i've worked with, it should just slide off the shaft of the transmission. But as i'm trying to slide it out, it doesnt come out... it sorta looks like its coming out.. but something is holding it in?? but no bolts at all are on the transmission to the block. I know it shouldn't take this long for me and my friend to take this motor out... but i've never pulled out a supra motor before... so i don't know whats holding the motor to the transmission? I looked at the manual and it says Slightly lift the engine, and i should be able to slide it out.. but maybe the shaft is binding on the clutch?? i dunno.. can you guys help me out? I can describe it more if needed. :) thanks again guys

You gotta pull the shift fork out! It just snaps into the trans, remove the inspection cover on the bellhousing and pull the fork out.

I unno if youll have enough clearance to get the spline from the tranny out... Is te radiator removed(sure hope so). I would pull the tranny as well. Not that much more work.

man put the bolts back on the tranny and undo the drive shaft take out the shifter drain all the tranny fulid and undo the tranny mount undo clutch pressure line ( 5 speed ) or undo the shift linkage and the tranny cooler lines ( auto ). jack up the ass end high in the air and pull the f-ing thing out really it may take you an hour or two to do all the but it will save you from fighting with trying to get the tranny to mate up once you put it back in. trust me its is a pain in the a$$. just pull the tranny to its alot less work. good luck man.

you cant have the transmission in there by itself... its only got the rear mount... it uses the engine as support, without it youd fuck up your mounts royally unless you support it with a jack

10x easier, IMO... another way to make it easier is to pull the harness w/ the engine instead of leaving it in the car. Pulling the glovebox vs. pulling the intake manifold in the engine bay... thats kind of easy, isn't it? :icon_razz

I always hated lining the engine/trans up while they were in the car. Biggest PITA I can think of.

Agreed....

One should definitely take the tranny out at the same time.. I learned that the hard way when i did my first pull.. You'll save alot of bloody knuckles and time if you get em both in one swoop..

^ And the tops bolts are super easy to get to if you pull them together. No more 6' extension/swivel crapp!
lol, i remember that 6' extention we had put together, lol... + swivels  and a bit off topic here, but for easy access to the oil pan/under-side of motor, dropping the subframe is 10x easier than pulling the motor

^ I will still pass on this, especialy since another 8 bolts and a few wires/speedo/Clutch SC later you can have it all out and change anything else that needs changed w/o the risk of having the entire car fall on top of you... thats just me though, I don't like having a car hang over me w/ a few jack stands holding it up (especially since I'm in the garage by myself 90% of the time) Again, thats just me though. I always make everything seem so dramatic :icon_conf

You can put a tie strap around the windshield wiper post and the top holes on the transmission to suspend it without the engine in the car. Put something to protect the sheetmetal like a bunched up rag.

i hear ya on that... it's just there are 3 bolts holding the subframe up there... and all you have to do other than that is losen the brake lines... and of course have the proper equipment

o and engine mount nuts :)
