Ahh! Labor is where you got killed.

I always do my own assembly and labor, wherever I can. For one thing, makes it pretty easy to know who is at fault, when something goes wrong :D

The head is where things can get real expensive real fast.
sufacing
Valve job (cost per hole X24)
valves (pending how yours look, Ferrea are much nicer than stock)
springs (probably want to replace the 20yr old OEs)
setting the clearance - might need to buy additional shims (not cheap)
retainers, locks, etc

Do it once and do it right. You won't make any power (and the motor will run poorly) if your valves are leaking at the seat.

TRUTH.

You can EASILY sink another $3500 into the head! I'll be doing a resurface, basic port/polish, a light bowl blend, and the 975 springs for now. Depending on how finances look, I might toss cams in there right off the bat, but we'll see :D

What these lists also don't take into account:

Clutch - if the motor is out, do you really want to leave that old clutch on? or replace it while everything is apart? Would suck to do all that work and then have it slip as soon as you turn the boost up.
transmission - again, the hard work is done and its out of the car. at least inspect it.
injectors - at a minumum clean them (~$90 at www.cruzinperformance.com)
gaskets, hoses, etc., aren't cheap for the real Toyota versions
re-wire your knock sensors (or atleast inspect the wiring) Save a lot of hassle later.

There is alot that goes into a rebuild besides pistons, rings and bearings. If all your other stuff has been recently replaced, then you probably don't need to do it again. If not, add it to the list. Not trying to discourage you, but there are a lot of costs that go into refreshing an engine and then making sure you don't have any problems when you get it back together.

Always plan for the unexpected.

Yep, that list of mine is the shortblock online.

Things not listed:

TEC-2
NM ShortThrow Shifter
5 Speed Swap
6 puck clutch setup
12lbs flywheel
Tubular T4 header
PT67
680cc injectors
Walbro 255

etc etc... I really don't want to know how much I've spent on this car :D

ARRRRRGGGGHHH thats sooo depressing. luckily i'll have banked after my deployment. I agree with everyone else... do it right the first time. and by do it right i mean "balls to the wall or not at all" build that sucker so you can throw a nuke at it and it won't even shudder. I don't care if its all stock bolt ons as long as i have the potential to throw whatever i want at it and not worry.

I come from a land down under
After the last meltdown here I came close to parting it out and had someone interested in the Head so I added up what it owed me and it's safe to say I was shocked ;) (I have part price deafness when shopping for a build)

My build cost me about $5200... The built shortblock with almost everything replaced was $2900, and the built head with oversize valves was $1900. Plus the 264 cams added $525.
