Yes, it is easier to remove the gear box with it.

First, unplug the wiring harness from the ECU. Push it through the firewall, and lay it over on the motor. There are just a few plugs you will need to take loose, and you won't need to take it off the motor yet. Then, pull the radiator and fan. Drop the driveshaft, and tranny mount (support tranny), and then the motor mount bolts. Disconnect the exhaust from the turbo, and at this point you are 95% ready.

There is a 48 (I think) step write up in the tech section. I think it's stickied at the top.

You'll need to get the radiator and fan out of the way.You gotta break the fuel line lose near the frame rail, and disconnect the clutch linkage if 5-speed, as well as shifter. And, you will need to break a few wires off the harness loose, but most stay on. I know the wiring to the alternator come from the fuse box, and there are plugs that go from the harness over to the igniter. There are a few more, but I'm not exactly sure where. I know there is one wire to the firewall right after it gets into the engine bay from the ECU, and I think the wires going to the fuel pressure relays need to come off. A/C lines need to come loose too. Once you get everything you know needs to come off, and anything else you see that I'm missing, lift the motor slowly to be sure you aren't pulling anything that is still hooked up.

Here's that thread:
