My Build VS my fathers build!!

I don’t think I could ask for a better father. I am 35 years old and he is willing to split the cost of my build! I am currently re-building my 7MGTE after a BHG, if you check my build thread you will see its going to be quite nice, and I hope to push out somewhere between 750 - 800 hp. Needless to say that was quite generous of him. He also has an 89 supra that he was going to donate to the build but now he has other plans. He is still offering me 1/2 the money and that is great, however he is also challenging me to race my supra when it’s all finished against his supra he now plans on building.

Because he is splitting the cost of my build I told him I would help get information for his build (its the least I could do right?) What he wants to do is put a Small Block Chevy 400 engine in his 89. (yup he is an old guy that misses the 60's muscle) He is doing this old school engine, no fuel injection; his plan is 2 - 4 barrel carbs. I don’t know anything about doing that but I figured someone here will. I want to get him good information because when we are both finished we are going to the ¼ mile drag strip to race. I plan on winning and he is quite the competitive person so I don’t think he is going to build a slow engine. When he starts I will be doing a 2nd build thread for him and when we race I will have my wife video tape it so I can post it here when I kick his A$$!

So anyone with information that will help him please PM me or point me in the right direction. I dont want to start a fight about installing this in a supra, I just want to help him finish so my 7m can wipe the track with it!

Thanks all!

A local freind of mine swapped a SBC into an 89. Will have to see if he is up to some brain picking. He is finishing up on his latest creation, the Civette.

As usual, I have no intelligent input, but I would love to see a video of these two going at it. Supra on Supra action is one of my favorite videos to watch. It runs a close second to girl on girl.

honestly I don't see the hood clearing with a carb setup...

local around here with an L98 TPI motor out of a 3rd gen F-body with the auto from it as well and spray... it's quite fast as it's not stock...

it DOES clear the hood, but IIRC he had to remove some of the bracing in areas. gonna be one hell of a tight fit...

ive driven a supra with a 350sbc and it was a pretty fun car. a 400sbc is a good motor, we built a few of them while i was at school that were putting down 600 and 700hp on the engine dyno and tons of torque.

I did think the same thing. Someone here did make a hood, I think he raised the middle section about 2" or so? I am trying to find the post. If anyone remembers that and can point me to the post, I have searched but have not found it yet.

EDIT - I found it. http://www.supramania.com/forums/showpost.php?p=362715&postcount=24

I want Rajunz hood SOOO bad! That thing is beautiful!

To me, the MKIII has always had that import muscle car look... A few years ago, yeah, it might have been upsetting to see an SBC goin into a Supra, but you know its a solid motor, and with all the other types of motors goin in these cars, I say go for it... You should start up a build thread for your dad... Or better yet, get your dad to join so he can start a build thread... :D:D:D

I miss theWeezL ... I talked to him a few times, (he got a custom sm sticker with his names on it! remember those! haha) I want Rajunz hood too ! for my fathers build! The hood scoop would actually be usefull! Plus we need the extra space for the carbs. I printed the pics I hope he is into doing one for us..

Lemme ask this - why a 400? I prefer a 383 (stroked 350) on the street. If he's already got that 400, that's one thing. If he wants something seriously fun, tell him to pick up an LS1 for that MKIII, and actually be LIGHTER than stock!

*edit* Also, you can get a carb'd intake for the LS1 ;)

I can answer the LS1 question. He wants to build an old school small block. So an LS1 is a no go simply because he wants a simple engine. I His plan so far is to use 2 4 barrel carburetors. I will let him know about the LS1 and getting carbs for it, everything is on the table right now so we will see.

Why a 400 I do not know, and I cant say that it will be a 400. He had a line on a 400 from a friend so thats what may have started the 400 talk. However I did find out that he did not buy that 400.. Soon as he has a solid list I am going to start a build thread for him and get him an account so he can update it and talk to everyone as much as he can. Alot of the updates will come from me. I think he is currently trying to decide to either build one from the ground up, or order a built engine from someplace like Summitt. My opinion the other day to him was, to purchase a buiild engine and spend more of his time on cleaning up the car, it needs some TLC. Keep an eye out for a build thread on this once he has a clear idea of what he is going to use.

He is still on the fence about auto or 4 speed... He is not building a race car and he may have more fun with a 4 speed.

I do want to thank everyone for the support.. this should be an interesting build once it gets going. I think it will at least be unique.

The LS1 is just a lighter version of the same - 2 valves per cylinder, pushrod, with a big lumpy thing in the middle of the block ;)

It's the extreme weigh savings + INCREDIBLY well flowing heads stock that make me suggest it!

Basically, tell him it's a 350 with AFR heads stock ;)

Otherwise, 383 is where it is at. 4" bore + 3.75" of stroke FTMFW. The Chevrolet 400 small block developed a reputation for overheating.

Hell, finding a 400/455 Pontiac motor would make for a hell of a fun MKIII as well! One of the more compact designs - Pontiac has neither a small block nor a big block - the external dimensions of the block are the same, from a 326ci motor to a 455ci motor.

400 sounds good, might as well cut a big hole in the hood and stick a blower on that sucker. Then no 7M will touch it

Doward: Why not the LS6? Seems it's close to 400c.i. iirc, with aluminum block, heads, etc. like the LS1? I believe there's a company offering a complete supercharger system for both as well. Only thing I don't like about either one is the plastic intake plenums(If I'm thinking of the right motor). Wouldn't want to attempt a high boost turbo on it.
