I am going to post this in here since the Electrical Thread area is still locked.

Does anyone know where to get either the ECU harness extension, or the connectors for it so I can make one myself? It really wouldn't be that hard to make an extension since all it is, is matching pin for pin on the connectors.

how long of an extension are you looking for?

autosport makes an extension which is approx. 6" long.

while the connectors for 89+ are made by AMP/tyco, they can be difficult to source. I've got a set of harness-to-ecu plugs if you want (all de-pinned from an old wiring harness)

I have an 88 with a manual in it. if it will work for it let me know what you want for them. is it both connectors? if so then I should be able to make one work with no problems. All I would need is the female connector end from the ecu. I can find a bad ecu for dirt cheap on ebay or something like that. Autosport doesn't even make them for a prefacelift Supra. So I would have to make one for sure.

well, luckily i actually have an 87-88 harness as well...you want the bare plugs or plugs with wires attached? PM me...

be prepared for a lot of soldering if you want to attach wires to the ecu-side of the plug...

At a guess I'll say that you aren't going to want this, however, for the sake of future searchers...

I'm pretty sure that DrTweak makes a patch harness that gives you a few inches of length.

I debated doing something like this for an auto-manual conversion in a Toyota 4Runner, but after the way things went together on the ecu side of things, I was less and less confident that such a long connection would last the test of heat, fatigue, vibrations, and time. I decided a custom harness was the right way to go.

Have a link? Is it like a fields harness?

They don't have anything listed for a 7MGTE and there is no way in hell I will pay that kind of a price for an extension. almost $200! for a few connectors and some wire....These people are crazy. I have someone on here that is willing to ship me a couple of connector ends and if I can solder them together and they work ( which I will test for sure ) then I will post on here about it and sell the ones I fix up that I won't need. ( for nowhere near the price of these people. )

so what is the color difference in the ecu plugs? I have seen yellow and grey so far. My friend has a grey one but i have looked on ebay and for the exact same thing as what he has but in yellow plug. is there a difference in them?

Dude... relax. I'm certainly not telling you that you have to buy one, I just posted about it so that in the future, people who search and find this thread will know what options they have available. As for the price... do the math: (these are *wholesale* prices, btw)
  • 64 female pins @ $0.50 each
  • 64 male pins @ $0.50 each
  • 32 feet of wire ~$2
  • 3 male connectors @ $6.00 each
  • 3 female connectors @ $6.00 each
That's $102 just in parts. Never mind labor and tools, which are going to consume most of the rest of the $33 that's left. The guy is selling these for close to cost when all is said and done.

Furthermore, as I recall, the original Fields harness was a fair bit more money than this 20 years ago.

If you want to build your own, fine. If you want to sell them at a loss, that's your business as well. But don't go calling other people crazy before you've been there, or at least run the numbers.

Lastly, keep in mind that the ones from Tweak aren't patched together from 20 year old used parts, they are all brand new materials.

FWIW, the receptacle side of the harness does not have pins, it has posts that would normally be soldered to the PCB. On the plug side, the pins run around 0.15 each wholesale (not 0.50). The connectors are also dirt cheap...there is a decent margin on these harnesses and I suppose that is why they are made.

As far as the differences between harnesses, the <88 and >89 use plugs from different series' of connectors. The >89 use AMP multilock 040/070 series. I cannot tell you what series the <88 plugs are from, just that it is in fact different.

My apologies, I was making an educated guess at wholesale costs.

To be honest, I'm glad that someone in this industry is making money - and I'm not going to begrudge him a profit. He's welcome to charge anything he wants - it's not like anyone else with the skill, knowledge, initiative, and connections to make these has stepped up to the plate.

Agreed. I was happy to pay $135 for the harness which is made correctly. In reality, I probably would have paid more as it let me avoid hacking up my new engine harness (which at $400, was extremely cheap as well)

Once you have the tooling, I imagine putting the harness together is relatively straightforward; however, there is no getting around the fact that wires need to be soldered to the pins, which is a pain in the ass in every way.

Soldering is something I do very well. Which is why I don't mind making my own extension. Or at least making an attempt to make one. If I fail then I chalk that one up in the loss column. If it work great then I will know what I am doing for the next one and make that next one even better.
