I finally got around to pulling the old engine out my newly acquired Supra, and thought that some of you who might be putting off an oil change would like to see the results of such an action.
From what the previous owner told me, (I bought the car with the blown engine), his wife was the primary driver, and she would go considerable distances between oil changes and basic engine repair. It finally locked up in a parking lot and had to be towed to their mechanic.
The damage:
Oil pan and block destroyed.
When the oil pan was removed there were metal flakes from the bearings everywhere. A cursory inspection revealed all but two rods had destroyed their bearings.
The number one rod had broken just below the piston skirt. When the remains of the lower half of the rod continued to turn they tore the cap off, jammed the upper half of the rod through the block, and bent the oil pump drive gear.
The small brass piece in the above pic actually fell out of the thermostat housing.
The damage to the turbo impeller wheel was more a factor of poor maintenance than the engine failure, but its still trashed.
Those are all of the carnage pics I have right now. I'm busy swapping over usable parts to the newer engine I got from Aaron at Driftmotion. More on that later.
