im new to the idea of stand alone systems. Would it completely replace my ecu and what would you recomend i do instead of buying a heat dried harness

If you get your hands on a good harness with all the right pieces you will be ok. You will need a ecu too.
The first thing I noticed about my 88 was the connectors were brittle even at 113k miles, it was a delicate task anytime I had to do some work and unconnect stuff, but then after dealing with afm issues and to top it off, knock sensors, I replaced mine with a megasquirt.

I dont know if all of them are like that. Seems like my turbo supra was always the hottest engine compartment I have ever had so if thats the route you take, choose carefully.

Edit: To help aim this thread in the right direction im looking at spending around $3-4k on driveline and included elctronics.

Sorry, I thought you spent "all" your money on parts, got the wrong idea. You probably don't need new pistons and rods. just bearings, rings, a fresh grind on the crank, etc. Cams are nice, reground stock cams are cheapest, I think, but takes some fussing with shims to make it right. You can get away with stock, but reground valves, stock springs. Then you have a basic starting point to build on later, if you like, and plenty of budget left for things that really add power.

stand alone systems replace your ecu. They have somewhat less comfort features and less calibration to varying conditions than the stock ECU, which is designed for smooth operation in regular driving anywhere. but you can't calibrate the stock ECU. Yet.

Is r154 in your plans? For 450whp you don't have to get a standalone but you have the potential to get a better tune with a standalone vs. a piggyback.

Is that true? There seem to be examples of close to that power with no mention of standalones. (ALso seems to be a lot of 500+ builds that say "stock internals"). for example:

Could you clarify why you need a standalone setup for 450whp? Thanks.

My cylinder head cost $560 to be done...valve regrind, straightening, decking, valve seals.
