I come from a land down under
ALWAYS ran +1qt after losing a GE under brakes on the way home from Sydney..

Just fill it till it's full on the Dipstick then add a Qt redip it and mark the stick with a new full mark... not exactly Rocket Surgery..

You do when your name is IJ! You should see some of the stuff he's built over the years...

There are a lot of solutions, on this subject I would recommend you read people's build threads and decide. Its not just the rad you want to look at if your concerned with overheating. Generally the stock rad is fine, however if you run hard, there is a lot of heat soak in the engine bay for the turbos. My car overheated while running at 150 kph for about 10 minutes because I was in 5th gear with about 2 pounds of boost while I played around beside a honda that thought he was doing well.. (I had to keep letting off to keep the bumpers lined up). Then I went and got my larger rad and never had an issue.
But, if your worried about heat overall, with a 7MGE.. you dont have to worry about it.

I don't get why everyone has so many cooling issues. Driving through texas in the dead of summer with the ac blasting and going anywhere from 75 to 95 I had no issues. Stock cooling system. Even if I drive it hard for a bit I don't get any noticable spike.

i have a 86.5 and i just fixed a cracked hose, but before if i ran it hard i would garuntee over heat. its a 7mge and im thinking about running that royal purple liquid ice coolant additive i read alot of good stuff about it.

Toyota Red Coolant (there is an alternative) is suited best for the 7M's. Tiny bit costly, but is the only coolant I run in these.
As for cooling issues, I only had an issue with boosting for long periods of time. Dont know if it was the coolant spiking to hot or if it was just temperature around the exhaust side, but regardless... our engine bays get hot. (hotter than any other vehicle I have owned)

Overheating and Heat soak are two different issues though. I just haven't found the 7MGE has as much cooling problems as the turbo variant. The stock rad should be perfectly fine if everything else is working properly.

You really should just fix what is causing it to overheat before pouring magical liquid to help it cool. Something has to be wrong for it to overheat, unless you're talking about running it on a race track? Otherwise you shouldn't be having problems.

Said it best right here. The stock cooling system also includes many air dams meant to direct air to the best place it could go: through the radiator. Many people take these off for various, generally foolish reasons. Even stock it is quite capable, if it is all there and functioning properly. ;)

The main one is a big plastic cover that goes under the front of the engine. If you look under the front of your car you will definitely be able to see it.

so i notice that the 7m is very prone to over heating,.

It is not. In stock form it easily exceeds the NHTSA cooling requirements all autos must meet to be sold in the US. In over two decades of driving mine in some very adverse conditions it never overheated. Not once. Any car in stock form that does has something wrong with it.

That said it's interesting to note the single most common cause of automotive breakdown for all cars in the US, year after year, is cooling system related.

since we are on the topic of cooling systems, is it worth it to swap a electrical fan set up for the already existing mechanical fan? will it still cool efficiantly, and do you gain any throttle response and or hp?

No. Any gain in horsepower will result in a higher load on the alternator and less cooling capabilities. I don't know why people forget about the law of conservation of energy when it comes to fans...

Also, when my Supra was N/A it NEVER overheated. Ever. And now that it's turbo, guess what. It still never overheats. And I don't even have the undertray. I have a feeling its the rest of the blockers that really come into handy... As a matter of fact.. I've never heard my clutch fan kick on.

I used to have flex-a-lite's on my car, and went back to stock.
Do E fans work well? Yes. Better than stock? No. Did i get more power with E fans? No.
Did i occasionally have a weak battery from the E fans running after shutdown? Yes.
Did i overheat twice from failed E fan relays? Yes.
