I have 1986 7mge and the engine seems to have a valve cover leak on exhaust side due to the fact that u can see and smell oil burning off the manifold. my question is..could that be the problem and would the fact that the car had been sitting for a while contribute to the smoke out the exhaust opon starting the engine? valve seals gone? i maybe barkin up the wrong tree

Yes it is pretty common that the valve covers leak onto the exhaust mani (my guess is the spark plug valley is filling w/ oil also). And yes smoke on startup is likely valve stem seals failing.

Try the Distributor O-ring. that leaks over the exhaust side of motor.

what color is the smoke on start up?... since it's been sitting for a while you could be running on turpentine instead of gasoline!!!

lol well the gas smells OLD! but so far lately i have not seen smoke on start up, but most of time it just idles. still pissin to get is road ready...ugh but the leak is close to fire wall so i assume its valve cover. so would i just get new seals and be done? i assume checkin for oil in spark plug valley is self explanitory. thanks!

Oil prolly just dripped down the valve seals from sitting.

Replace the valve cover gaskets and apply fipg at the corners of the front cam caps. Oil can also leak from the 4 top 14mm plugs between every 2 spark plugs that hold the no.3 valve cover on.

Also, while you have the cover off, replace those shitty VC bolts with hex hardware and get new grommets. The old ones are more than likely dried up and useless.

O-Ring for Distributor: 90099-14018 <-- Toyota part # it's cheap and might as well replace it while you are in there.
