lol... i love the LS1's. its just a saying floating around the anti-LSx swapping crowd. the LS1 belongs in most cars, including RX7's and 240's. mmm... L92 heads :naughty:, crower poke and stroke, magic stick 4, kooks, x, bullets, dumps... 125 shot. i think we have a winner!

winner? too light to be a good boat anchor, the original iron 350 was much better. big looser in boat holding ability, and that should be its primary purpose!!! :biglaugh:

The 7M gets a bad rap, but in reality its no less reliable than a J series engine. Poor rebuilds, zero maintainance and cheep kids wanting more boost rather than spending the money on reliability are what bring the engine down and give it a bad name.

My car came with a 7M GTE and will leave this world with a 7M GTE.

Zero regrets and 300+lbs/ft from 3200rpm:thumbup:

No regrets at all: The 7M has been proven to make big power reliably. The aftermarket has expanded and the prices for performance parts has dropped substantually over the years.

I would probably consider an engine swap if there was a direct-fit supra engine that was over 3.0 liters.

i dont regret swaping my 7mge to a 7mgte i do regret not putting in forged rods and pistons in the motor while i was building it now im kinda limited to under 400 hp.

if i had unlimited money and could deal with a car being down for more than a month i would hvae gone straight to a 2jzge-t but i hate having my fast car not running. i am accumulating parts to do the 2jzge-t swap not because the 7m is weak but because i failed to build it to the level i should have and theres no point in pouring money into building a 7m when i can do the same thing to a 2jz and have the next evolution of the toyota inline six

plus i can get the entire engine and everything done over the next year or two while the 7m continues to put down power and be reliable

so do i regret the motor choice no do i regret my hesitation to pull the trigger on buying rods and pistons for it yes

I gotta agree with Ian - every day my 7M build continues, is a day I wish I would have just bought an LS1.

Tuned my buddy's '00 Camaro SS, all stock with just an MS4 cam + headers to the tune of 420rwhp. Knocks down 21mpg on the highway, and 16 in town.

The 7M is an awesome engine, plus it's 3 litres like the 2JZ. The only thing wrong with the 7M platform are people that don't know how to maintain them properly, and don't know how to build them properly. Then when they fail, it's the engine's fault. :icon_roll

Could not have been said better.

Sure, the overall engine and head design were updated from 7M to 2JZ...
But, the main reason why 7M's appear to be "less reliable" than 2JZ's is because,
A majority of the MKIV crowd (or 2JZ in general), typically have some money, do things RIGHT, and don't cut corners.
Then you've got your 7M crowd, that's majority to teenagers...and sometimes, going big or going home isn't always within a reach.

7M is amazing, and I've had no regrets thus far...
Besides, look at all the folks on here making good power, that have done things right;)...

with what, an HP Tuners or something?

is it an Auto car? my friends FD gets close to 30mpg on the freeway. he did put down 30hp less than your friend though. his cam isnt as aggressive as an MS4.

I love my N/A 7M. LOLZ!

Really though, I do, but I'm stuck between a 1JZ or 7MGE NA-T. :)

Look, I love my 7m and don't have any plans of swapping to something different. But, the 7m has had problems from day one back in 1986 (as far as the MKIII is concerned).

Out of the box, it is less reliable than a 2j (don't know much about 1j's). I had my first Supra back in 1995, when some of these MKIII's were still in warranty. The headgasket problem was a known thing. There were calls to get Toyota to perform a recall because of it. Somehow, Toyota escaped and what remained were a bunch of MKIII's running around with what was really a known defect; namely, the torque specification of headbolts.

A significant percentage of these cars have had BHG's. If someone buys an older car and romps on it - they should know they are running a higher risk than with most vehicles.

The 7m has now been proven to be reliable if rebuilt properly and with attention to detail. Don't blame all of the 7m's image woes on teenagers who are not taking care of their vehicles - while abuse certainly never helps a vehicle, it does not mean that the specification flaw is not there.

I think it easy for us to forget how old these cars are getting - they may age gracefully, but let's not forget the 7m's have had the chance to age a bit more than 2j's.

Bottom line - the 7m is a great engine. I personally see no reason for the expense or time of a swap unless you're really looking to put some serious numbers to the ground. But that does not change the fact that a 2j is indeed a more reliable and better designed motor.

honestly anyone that says the 2J isn't better than the 7M in stock form is a fool...

100 more HP stock, MHG stock, stock long block will take insain amounts of power and boost...

When I added it up, I could have a built 7M for the price of a 2J swap, that's the only reason I never did it...

I have the engine in the engine bay already, why not use it?

Now if I had a shell....

I never said the 7M was better than a J series engine, I said it was no less reliable than a J series engine when it is looked after properly. Plenty of dead J series engines out there.

To be honest a head gasket not torqued to the right spec is a defect, but the engine as a whole is a stout bit of kit. And to be honest next to a J series engine most things are inferior. But if you look at a 7M next to other engines of the period it comes up trumps.
