7m or 1jz

ok so i have a 87 supra na 5 speed. the engine blew back in may and its be sitting around. knowing tax time is here im trying to figure out so i wanna go with another 7m na or a 1jz. the ? i have for everyone out there is should i get the 1j jza70 clip or just the engine? and if the clip where can i find a good one for a cheap/good price? any info would be great.

Go 1Jz i debated on this forever but 1jz is a newer design and can make more power on stock internals. Also look at 2JZ Na-T that's what i was gonna do but got way to good of a deal on a 1jz. Good luck find a JZa70 Clip they cant ship them to the U.S anymore and when i was looking i only found like 2 of them. one was in California somewhere and they were $3000 to $3500

clips are going to be relatively expensive no matter where you go.. A lot of people went that route back in the day (a few still do), but due to that and the move in Japan to crush many of the older model cars and motors in their junkyards (there was an incentive IIRC) for space/etc has led to fewer clips, and as a result the prices went up significantly.

just the motor itself is going to be the more cost effective option (though arguably because you miss out on some of the accessories that aren't included with a motor-set—this happened to me, and I should have done the clip, but times were different back then). As far as where to buy motors? Well, it's usually the same places (for good motors). The ones most on the forum including myself would recommend are: JHot, Jarco (are they still around?), and Driftmotion.




EDIT: THEY CANT SHIP CLIPS TO THE U.S. ANYMORE? I thought that was just due to a conflict with pallet/packing change.. wow.

i would go through driftmotion, give them a call and talk to Arron and see what your options are, he is a good guy and wont steer you wrong!

he can do the swap for you as well, just drive the car to him in so cal and drop it off for a bit and he will have it running like a champ

Clips are getting rare, thus expensive. 2JZ NA-T swaps have gotten significantly cheaper over the years, and the engines can be found locally.

I stayed 7M, but if I was to do it over again, I would have gone 2JZ NA-T or full GTE swap.

Haven't kept tabs on Jarco, but I believe they're still around. JHot on the other hand (where I got mine from) seems to be shutting down. Unfortunate, too, they were pretty awesome...

I'd say it should just come down to your budget in terms of what you should pick. If your budget is extremely tight then might want to pick up another 7M-GE, if not you should just buy the entire front clip from Driftmotion.

Also, since you don't already have a R154 laying around you'd be best suited just buying the front clip. Unless you wanted to reuse your W58...
Not to mention all the other parts that should be included in the clip such as the 1JZ bell housing, rear sump oil pan, radiator, etc.

Georgia shut down a long time ago, their Denton, TX location seems to be winding down though. I emailed them a while back (like 2 months ago) because they kinda quit bringing in new inventory and just sold off what they had...

Personally when I bought my 88 supra turbo, my 7m was VERY messed up when I got it. I chose to build the motor and go from there it was more in my budget to do so instead of a 2j swap, but I have to agree with the other guys on the 2jz na-t swap its getting cheaper to do and welll worth it, not dogging 1j's at all because I like them a lot too but why not go all out if your not planning on keeping the 7m? Its all on your budget man but know that a well built 7m can be very nice...the 2j will just be superior because its a whole nuther engine=newer, different head ect.

First off, it's tough to suggest something without knowing what your budget and goals are. If you can afford it, the 2J is a nice setup. If you're on a budget, stick with what you've got.

The cost difference will be significant.

If you're planning on going aftermarket turbo, new engine internals, standalone, etc, etc, then you're looking at dropping a lot of cash, and engine choice starts to matter less, as you're only really going to keep the bare block and head anyway.

your best bet is to go 1jz, for one, it increases the value of the car, you may not want to sell it now, but eventually u will consider it, when that time comes, the money spent putting a 7MGE or even a 7MGTE in the car will turn in poor value, depending on the condition of the car, you can fetch anywhere from $1000 (lowball) to $2500 for the car in decent condition. With a 1J, that will increase to at least $2500 if the body is a rust bucket and upto $7000 if the body is mint. I know lots of people dont consider selling their "baby", but that inevitable day will come, and when it does, you will be much better off. Clips are hard to find these days, and are expensive, but you get everything you need without worry, motor sets are easier to come by and there are a few vendors on here, as well as the for sale section, that have whatever you will need to make it run.
