New to this whole thing really, but I have an 89 targa turbo and I am wanting a solid reliable st machine that won't get overtaken by v8s or 4bangers on roids, at the same time i kno what my car can do around corners ;) so you get what I want. Around 4-500bwhp. Anything more is more for track, and hard to drive on city streets. So to the point... 2j or my 7m? ... There is much headache with a swap and a front clip can be pricy.. Worth it ? I guess it may but can I get this from a 7m? I hear and read that the head on a 7m is not that great. Can someone explain why and if you can get the head improved or if it would be best just to jz the project

I fell under this category. I tried and failed multiple times with the 7M.

I went with a 1jz and failed there too lol.

So moral of the story it's all in the owner and the knowledge and I might add patience lots of patience.

So what if I bought a 92 supra with a 1j ... Can a 2j go right in without fab and would I still need the front clip for a 2j

Oh and to answer the other question about the 7M head it's really not so bad for power it's the head gasket and torque specs that become the problem.

500whp is achievable with the stock head.

Recommend the block and head get machined to spec for a MHG and using arp head studs.

After that you should not have any problems supporting the power with good tuning.

Why not just stay 1jz ? It is just reliable as a 2jz it just does not have the displacement but can easily support 500whp

But to answer your question the 2jz will swap in but you'll need a harness and ecu and to bang the firewall n a little to fit the stock twins turbo setup. But if you go single turbo right away you can make it fit.

Now here's the thing ... I have an 89 and it was that year that the motor mounts could accommodate the jz motor ... Do I still need the drift motion jz swap motor mounts and will it go in my car without fab

Depends on if your car was a 89 that had square mounts or round mounts also depends on what your jz came out of

If there is a 1jz into a supra, whatever brackets wheather oem or driftmotion or BIC, square or round mounts, they can come off and get put onto the 2jz, so the 2jz can drop in

I don't think his 89 has a jz in it yet..

I know he was talking about buying a 92 1jz earlier but his last question was regarding a 89.

No ... Mk didn't have the jz untill 91 or 92 ... But if you read up on mk3 there was changes to the mounting for jz in the late 89... Before I got the car I was under the inpression thàt the jz would just plop right in like butter ... Was I ever wrong

QFT.

500WHP is where it's borderline for cost on the 7M vs the JZ. where it costs a similar amount, both starting from stockish. 400WHP is (IMO) where the 7M is clearly more economical to get to, maybe 450 if you're careful.

Note, I have an '89. Mine does NOT have the round motor mounts. That changed part way through the model year, so it's '89.5+ that the JZ "just drops in." It's not the showstopper that it was, you can buy mounts for the older square motor mounts to the JZ blocks easy enough now.

For that goal, I'd be looking at doing a 1.5JZ, where you take a 2JZ block and put the 1JZ-GTE heads and electronics in. This gives you the compatibility of the 1JZ with the chassis along with the 3L displacement and the easier power that makes. Pop a nice single on that, and piggyback electronics. Or just go straight to the 2JZ-GTE and go stand-alone. (I wouldn't do that, because it would get hard to drive on the street before I was done. XD :D I believe that the word I'm looking for is "Projectile.")

@KWITTS: Actually the JZA70 started production with the 1990 model year, but like the 7M, the wiring harness is different between '90 and '91-'92. It's also different for 1989, so if you have a 1989 chassis, you'll have some work to do to make the wiring work with the 1JZ wiring harness.

Ok got ya.

If you have a round mount style 89+ then yes a 1jz from a jza70 will drop right in.

If its a 1jz with a front sump like a chaser the sump and oil pan and motor mount brackets will need to be changed.

Also things like

Oil dipstick
Pick up tube
Baffle and some others I'm spacing need to be changed..

I've come to learn and see that this is not true.

I have a 89+ car made closer to 1990 year and it has square mounts but has the harness with grey plug style.

A good friend o mine also has a 89+ closer to a 1990 with round mounts but has the yellow plug ecu style.

So from what I've seen thus far 89 is all over the place with no real direction.

My car is an 89 white package, the tag inside the drivers door say manufactured in August 1988 ... So that being said I would assume it is not an 89.5
