Basic story.. I've got a 87 Supra with a 7M-GE, which has just got rod knock.

I'm looking at a 90' 7M-GTE, with a R154.

-How is the compatibility between my 87' harness and the 90' harness? (grey plug/yellow plug) As I've read lots of places saying it's important that it's from the same year.

Yes, I've searched the forum for my question.

you could use the gray plug harness but your going to have problems unles you repin the harness to match the body harness.

From my understanding, you can use the 90 engine, but you need to get an 87 or early 88 Turbo harness instead of the 90 harness. That being said, I may need a 90 Turbo harness in a few months... ;)

the year of the engine does not matter its just the year of the car/harness/ecu that need to be the same.

a 90 harness/ecu does not go into a 88 very nicely and the a 88 harness/ecu does not go into a 90 nicely.

just match the same year/car/harness and you will have no problems.

I have a 90 GTE Auto. I just picked up a 88 GTE motor. Both motors are identical when it comes to head/block/mount points.

With that said, the motor does not matter. What you have to match is the car, ECU, and the harness. One big
reason is because there is another harness under the dash.

Engines themself are all compatible, but require the corresponding engine mounts.
86.5-88 body require a 87-88 engine harness and ECU.
90-92 body require a 90-92 engine harness and ECU.

And of course if your using a turbo engine you need the turbo harness/ECU and vice-versa.

As for 89 it sounds like an abortion of year and you gotta see what you got in person. Good luck man, boost is a drug:icon_evil

By "early 88", what does that mean? Not all 88' wiring harnesses are compatible?

there is no early 88 harness or ecu. all 88's are the same as 87's and some early 89's.

Pretty sure some late 88's had some 89+ pieces. Nothing major like engine harnesses, i suppose. But I thought some of the late 88 model year had a few bits and pieces here and there that were introduced in 89.

For the engine plugs, it's easier just to go by color I suppose.

Yellow = pre89
Grey = 89+

Get an 87-88 yellow plugged harness and ECU. You also want to find one from a car that matches whether you have ABS or TEMS.

+USDM didn't have PPS on pre89's that EDM has. Have to rewire that (I did it, but I'm interested in what wires did I take out of the plug so that PPS wires could go in :icon_bigg)
