7M-GTE Leaking oil into Exaust, Why?

Hi there Supramania!

Im having a issue with my 1989 7M mk3 supra, its been off the road getting a suspension rebuild for the last two years, 7mgte ran perfect before taken off the road, since being off the road i have fitted HKS camshafts to the engine, Shimmed the oil pump 7mm and fitted new big end bearings, Engine also has a new remote oil filter t-stat and cooler, -10 lines

Turbocharger is a Turbonetics 60-Trim front with a T4 rear in a ct26 exhaust housing, that is the same as before it was taken off the road nothing has changed but now engine oil is leaking out of the exhaust (just the down-pipe + 1meter pipe connected no mufflers) after 15-20 seconds of running had around 1/4cup of oil on the floor

Small amount of blue smoke comes out exhaust, but not the amount id expect if the engine was burning lots of oil, Kinda leads me to think its coming out of the turbo and going down exhaust without being burnt? rather than a leaking valve stem etc and oil going through the combustion cycle and the leftover oil makes it way out and onto the floor

Engine and turbo was oil primed without EFI fuse before first start

Question is?

1. Has the oil seals gone on the turbo? leaking straight into the exhaust

2. Has the shimmed oil pump pressure increase caused this? Or being parked up for 2years?

3. Or the oils coming from the engine, Valve stems, head-gasket (but engine was in perfect running order before suspension rebuild) or the sitting has corroded the head-gasket?

Head-gasket is a Toyota item with a rebuilt head, ARP studs

Not really sure what to do, Figured id ask the community for advice, see if people have had a similar issue?

Thanks
Nick

Sounds like an issue with the turbo oil drain.

I was thinking similar, ive had it all off, its been refitted with the gaskets and sealant, Don't see how it could get blocked?

Doesn't need to be blocked, just kinked or not straight (in other words going down, then up and then down again).

take the downpipe off and look on the the back of the turbo. see if it looks like its been leaking.

but yes as poodles stated the drain is a pain, as its just gravity feed. dont take much to back thinkgs up and pop a seal.

I'm beginning to sound like a broken record: you can't "pop" the seals on a turbo. The fail due to wear, turbine imbalance, improper pressure to vacuum ratio inside the bearing cartridge, or carbon buildup.

It sounds to me like there may have been a problem before with the turbo, and now with the larger exhaust you're seeing it.

Ive pulled the turbo off it and found a bit of the sealant was restricting the drain at the block, Im going to build a new drain as im wondering if its just not coping with the oil,

Guess we will find out once the turbos back on

Question i have regarding the oil seals, can they dry out? and once they have a bit of oil pressure and spinning they can seal up? or now theve leaked possibly due to a restricted oil drain are they stuffed? rebuild time? or they may seal again when the drains fixed?

Thanks
Nick

Nick, the seals in the turbo are small, miniature spring steel piston rings. They act more like dams then they do seals.
