This is a FEELER thread... NOT a for sale, or advertising, thread...

That having been said, would anyone here be interested in a lightweight, hard anodized set of accessory pulleys for the 7M-GTE?

Pulleys included would probably be alternator, water pump, and power steering. All pulleys would be CNC aluminum, roughly 70% lighter than OEM, and would be hard anodized in a red, gray, or blue finish.

Alt and PS pulleys would most likely be OEM diameter, while the WP would be 10% underdrive to help reduce cavitation at high RPM.

Pulleys would be designed, developed, and manufactured in the USA by www.NonStopTuning.com (NST) and the following are some sample pics of what such pulleys COULD look like if ever built...

Thank you for the reply, I appreciate it.

The water pump would benefit from underdriving during high RPM operation. Often times something called cavitation happens at high RPMs in older engines, especially boosted ones. Underdrive water pump pulleys help slow the water pump, and thus reduce or eliminate the possibility of cavitation.

Slowing the accessories such as the WP, ALT, or PS, would also reduce some of the parasitic loss associated with the accessories, and would help free more power that would be sent to the wheels.

Personally I wouldn't underdrive the waterpump as in Summer low rpm situations with the AC on it can barely cope as it is, I added an electric booster to combat this.

You need to add an AC Idler pully as well stock is heavy as lead.

A properly designed underdrive WP pulley would actually help you in this department!!!

And thank you for the idea about the idler pulley. We will definitely look into it if there seems to be enough demand.

Ummm how do you figure that?

Underdrive will turn it slower than stock at idle and as it is the stock pump can barely move enough water to keep the engine from overheating in these conditions.

I have the Electric switch on and the temp comes back down to the T Stat opening.

Slowing the WP and the flow of the coolant will allow it to cool better as it flows through the system.

Slowing the WP at higher RPM also helps to reduce cavitation. Take a look at your local race tracks and autocross sessions, you will find a lot of the serious racers using underdrive WP pulleys.

At this point this is still a theory, as it would apply to the 7M, we will do some R&D and test a few options if the project becomes reality.

And I'm trying to tell you that the theory is wrong where a Mk3 is concerned.

By all means go for it and do your own testing to confirm Mike.

For the average guy having adequate cooling in traffic is far more important than reducing cavitation at high RPM (the electric booster solves that issue as well)

I'm not trying to shit on your idea just posting my findings from owning and modding a Mk3 since 1997.

Maybe offer 2 WP pullies?

One "Street" One "Race"?

My biggest concern is for the lightly modded guys that have a less than perfect cooling system slowing the pump could be enough to tip them over the edge heat wise and 7M's are notorious for commiting HariKari via the Rad ;)

Welcome to SM and I hope you do go into production.

Also nice to see you hard anodise them I had a set made last year by a friend in Greece and got them anodised locally (I was too lazy to set up the machines for a one off set as I don't make car parts for others)

Based on what science? Volume is directly proportional to the size and speed of the water pump impeller.

Cavitation? Maybe at 10,000 rpm but not on our stock or even up to 8000 rpm.

Cool better? You are only seeing half the picture. The portion where the coolant is in the radiator. You are disregarding the MORE important portion and that is where the coolant is in the engine block/head and removing the heat there. Slower system makes the coolant run hotter as it has more time to absorb heat. The issue is that a system is designed with a very specific heat carrying capacity in mind. Deviate from that and you introduce issues that were never designed into the engine.

and that is the difference between locals and the WRC folk. WRC do not underdrive anything especially in the cooling department. They can't. They are never at high enough road speed to let the air do the cooling so they can not afford to underdrive their cooling system otherwise, one dead motor. At the power levels they run, their margin for error in anything to include the cooling system is already on a razors edge.
