Your right, I did mix up the quotes. In any case, Adam writes it goes to the water outlet behind thermostat which is not the output side of the pump, its a radiator away from the suction side of the pump. The purpose was always clear though, since you need to ensure flow doesn't stagnate at the rear of the block/head.

Yeah I just wasn't seeing how water would flow from the back of the head to the thermostat housing through said pipe if it could just as easily flow through the head into the thermostat housing, but it makes sense to me now.

There was a member on another forum that had removed the entire coolant line assembly from the engine and plugged both ports at the back of the head, and that's what made me curious in the first place. I was trying to figure out what side effects blocking the port to the thermostat housing would cause, and now I see it could cause localized hot areas at the back of the head/block.

Also note that when the thermostat is closed the only flow through the engine comes from what can make it through the jiggle valve and the turbo cooling circuit (bypass line on the GE).
