but... JIS (*) power & torque figures are net after 1985, brute before 1985.

They're really around 170-176hp...so a lot of us guess. No one REALLY knows. Since 6Ms never came to the US, it's impossible to get USDM spec hp figures w/o throwing a stock 6M on an engine dyno.

I've guesstimated the mk2s drivetrain loss to be about 17 or 18%, 150whp (the most common number I've seen) + 18% = 177.

I remember reading some article about how 5Ms have better low end due to larger valves, but run out at higher rpms due to less amount of valves. It had to do with inertia and velocity and stuff, but I don't feel like explaining what I read. Plus, it's all theory anyways.

Meh.

It would be far more accurate if the bottom end was rebuilt ya know. Like new rings, bearings, etc. No overbore, no head milling. To get the more accurate number.

But good look in your endeavors anyway. Love to see more n/a mk2s out there

The bottom end isnt going to play a significant role in dyno (unless i have a spun bearing or something) ... just need good piston to wall clearance, good rings and good compression with everything else near stock specs.. . which if its performing as it should, should represent a stock engine if not + - 10HP to the max

The pistons and rings are in the bottom end... lol. The bearings don't have any role in hp, just good to have though. Especially it being a JDM engine, there's a lot more stop & go traffic in Japan which has a tendancy to wear engines out nice and good.

lol wtf

I'm sorry, but I really dislike that people think that JDM engines are "good" engines. They are junkyard engines. Treat them as you would a USDM junkyard engine. It does not matter to me what the mileage is that they CLAIM to have. It is still something that has sat for months or possibly years in a junkyard or in a storage facility where it's possible moisture is erroding stuff that shouldn't be erroded, parts are seizing, seals are drying out, etc.

Just my opinion though, but I will not sway on it. I just hope you don't find out the hard way if your engine blows up in your face.

I dislike that people THINK that way, not the actual people. You really need to relax. I am only looking to help you out and give you the best possible advice I can. If you choose to ignore me, that's fine. Don't come crying when the block grenades in your face.

Piston rings are about $100 for the set. Probably another $100 or less for the rod and main bearings. Really not all that much money to ensure the engine will last another 20 years, this time on US soil. $200 now could save you $500+ later on if the crank gets scored and needs machined, or the piston walls need to be bored out and you have to get new pistons, etc etc etc.

OT: Tanya, seen any pieced together 6M-GTE's..?

Hell yes. Russ Matusevich was running a 6MGTE in his 9 second mk2. Actual hp unknown, many rumors of 600-700hp.

Donnie Spears is running (or was) 348hp 394ft/lbs
Justin Morse 241hp 260ft/lbs

I'm sure there's more out there that just haven't dyno'd or put their numbers up yet.

JDM = for the love of CHRIST, rebuild me before you use me!

The 6m has always been a mystery to me...I never figured out what the big deal was....its a 5m with the balls of a 7m...now i'm sure its prolly one hell of a sight easier to stuff into a mk2, but its just....bah damn supras...:icon_razz

<3 7m

I have dealt with several JDM "low mileage" motors. 2 were 7m's and one was a 1ZZ-FE (out of an 05 celica w/ 12K on it). The 1ZZ was literally brand new...The 2 7Ms werent so lucky...now the block and head were in nice shape, but whether its the US, Japan, Europe, Mars, Antarctica, or anywhere in between, its still a 7M, and it still has the problems of a 7M. The head gaskets were blown, and antifreeze ran through the bearings. I'm lucky the cam saddles weren't toast, but they were ok. Now I don't know about you, but I will rigorously inspect a "40-50K" JDM every time now.
