hey does anyone know if i can stick in a 6 speed into the mk3?

I don't really know much about transmissions but i was looking into putting a 6 speed in because of gas mileage and i like the idea of a 6 speed transmission

as far as getting it to fit I'm sure it should fit but do i need an adapter plate for the bell housing any information would be helpful

How bad is your gas mileage to make you want to go through all of that?

I wouldn't mind putting in a T-56 with a .50 6-th gear and heading out to the salt flats...other then that, I cant see any reason for a 6 speed

Not really any point if you are doing it for gas milage. Idk about the t-56 but the v160 is not a double overdrive, their 6th is our 5th.

Just swapping to a V160 won't increase cruising gas mileage. The 5th gear of the R154 is actually lower than the 6th of the V160.

R154
* First Gear: 3.250:1
* Second Gear: 1.955:1
* Third Gear: 1.310:1
* Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
* Fifth Gear: 0.753:1

V160
* First Gear: 3.830:1
* Second Gear: 2.360:1
* Third Gear: 1.680:1
* Fourth Gear: 1.310:1
* Fifth Gear: 1:1
* Sixth Gear: 0.790:1

hey thanks for all the feed back as for the gas mileage i was thinking it wouldn't help too much but i kinda just like the idea of a 6 speed mk3

i know now that it would be a lot of money but this is going to be a long project so maybe in the future it will be done

A T56 would definitely be a lot cheaper than a V160. I don't know how much Richmond transmissions cost, but you can get a good used T56 for about a grand. V160s are between 3 and 4000, IIRC

OneJoeZee beat me to it. :)

Basically, with a 6 speed, what you get is an extra LOWER gear, not a higher one.

In order to make that work, what you need is a set of taller gears in the differential to go with. If you could find a set of 3.1:1 differential gears for the Mk3, that would work out nicely, with 1st gear being about the same with the V160 as it is with the R154, and it would make 6th nice and tall.

D&D Performance built T-56 with a Viper style Deep overdrive would be the way to go. Gets rid of all the weak links in the T-56 (shift forks and synchros) and has great ratios to work with a lower rear end ratio.

Chevy / Viper T-56

D&D Performance has been building and selling heavy duty 6 speed transmissions for Ford powered vehicles since 1993. In 1997 we introduced the first Viper T-56 gearset for Ford 5.0/5.8 applications and followed it up with a Viper unit for the 4.6 vehicles in 2000. We realized that there was a large void in the GM aftermarket T-56 area. Units on the market had gear ratios, input shafts, speedometer drives or shifter locations that were not suitable for retrofitting earlier vehicles. The D&D GM/Viper unit was introduced in 2002, and based on the reception it's received in the marketplace, it has very effectively solved the T56 retrofit problems with the following features:

650 lb-ft Torque Capacity

1.125 x 26T GM Input Spline

30T Viper Output Spline

Close Ratio w/ Deep Overdrives(2.66/1.78/1.30/1.00/.74/.50)

Carbon Fibre Blocker Rings

Steel 3-4 Shift Fork

Precision built and blueprinted by D&D technicians

Direct bolt-up to GM Saginaw/Muncie/T10 bell housings

Direct bolt-up to 4-Speed aftermarket steel bell housings

Accepts stock GM clutches,linkage,T.O.B.,pilot bearing,trans. mount

7T GM Mechanical Speedo Drive or Electronic Speedo Drive
