ok.. i've searched through SM and SF alot and found everything i can find on doign a 5 speed swap, but it usually refers to someone who is gonna still use their auto ecu. i have a wiring harness and ECU from a 5 speed car. in fact, i have an entire 5 speed car and a good auto car.

what are the exact parts i need to swap over and any changes or anything to be made? will i be able to unhook the old ecu, put the 5 spee one in, swap the harness and plug and play? will i have to modify it at all?

also, will i need to buy any new seals for the tranny or engine? i dont really like the idea of re-using seals unless its the popular thing to do (heh).

what is the process for swapping a 5 speed if you want it to be a true 5 speed car, not a half autop half 5 speed?

Why do all that unless you just feel more comfortable doing the whole harness thing.. I just swapped mine and left the auto ecu in.. The only thing I have is the o/d light flashes and when I use Cruise it wont turn off by pressing the brake or clutch.. (that's just wiring though!! The only seal I replaced was the rear main..

Unless the trans has known issues, it should be good to go as-is.......If you want to go the extra mile, go ahead and put in the engine harness and ECU, it doesn't take but a couple hours.

Swap in:
Manual brake pedal
Clutch master cyl (inspect and replace as necessary)
clutch hard line
clutch pedal
clutch flex line (suggest getting new one)
Slave cylinder (inspect and replace as necessary)
Flywheel (inspect and resurface as necessary)
Clutch kit (suggest getting new one - includes pressure plate, disc throw out bearing and pilot bearing)
Trans
Shift boot and shifter (suggest getting new bushings for shifter - one on end of shifter and one that holds it in trans)
driveshaft (either whole or just the front half)
Trans fluid - Red line MT-90 is my favorite
Clutch fluid - a good synthetic dot3/4 is reccommended.

That should be it.....

thanks guys tons of help. ive already got the 5 speed harness almost completely unhooked (except for whatever plugs are under the upper intake and the oil temp or pressure sensor which is down neer the power steering pump. im hopinh to have this thing done in about a week so wish me good luck and thanks again for the help!

my problem now is i dont know the proper way to remove the drive shaft? ive got a haynes and read the tsrm but i dotn have many tools just sockets, wrenches and a torque wrench. what is the proper procedure for removing the D/S from the tranny?

I come from a land down under
There are 4x 14mm bolts at the Diff

There are 2 x 14mm bolts at the Centre Bearing

Drop the Diff end then slide it towards the rear of the car to disengage the Yoke from the Trans.

(Be aware that gear oil will piss out if you haven't drained it.)

and dont let the shaft drop onto your lil finger squishing it inbetween the exh pipe and shaft. If you have a old auto yoke then jam it in the gbox to plug up the oil leak. The splines line up *suprise suprise*

ORRRRRRR..........You can take out the center bearing, disengage the DS from the trans (it slides right out and make sure to drain the gear oil before you start taking the trans off) and then take out the 4 bolts from the diff coupling........no need to take the Diff out if you don't have to...

ya im liking the idea of not removing the LSD... although i guess its good to have a spare LSD... i was under the impression that it was more than just bolts holding the D/S together i thought there were some fancy kinda like friction pins or sometyhin hah i dunno but thanks alot guys truly helpful as always,

Holding the two sections of the DS together yeah, but its easier just to swap out the entire assembly, assuming the center support bearing is in good condition.

ok need more help! HEHEHE

sorry. its just time is crunching and im still having trouble getting the wiring harness off the old engine (and i broke the wire going to the oil pressure sensor)

so if i were to use the auto ecu and harness that are in the receiving car, what changes would i need to make to the plugs to get the wiring to work? ahhhhhh im going crazy so many little things get in the way. the "big" things are easier than the "little" things.

so you are going to put in a auto harness with a manual engine?
You will need to do the neutral start switch bypass and the reverse light wireup.
Basically what you need to look up is the auto to manual conversion (wiring wise) All your connections are the same for the engine and ecu pins.Just change the reverse lights and neutral start switch as mentioned.

ok.... another thing... do i need to switch the starter from the auto to the one from the 5 speed? there were these shims on where the flywheel would be on the auto engine, but i dont remember them being on the 5 speed. so we installed the flyshweel without those shims (i hope i didnt fuck up)... and so now the starter is misalgined and making a funny noise as we crank the engine by hand.... if i swap in the 5 speed starter will it be fine or did we mess up?
