Im trying to help a friend out since he cant seem to register on SM for some reason. He has a 89 turbo supra. He just finished his 5spd swap on his car but has run into some problems. When he presses the clutch pedal and releases the pedal, he said it sounds like a griding noise but he said it doesnt feel like anything is grinding. The noise goes away once the clutch is fully engaged. It also only happens when he is releasing the clutch pedal. He cant figure out what it is so now im turning to the experts on SM for help

thanks

Hello all, I guess I can post after all. I am doing a 5 speed swap on my sons 89 Supra turbo and have run into clutch problems. When I push the pedal down there is a grinding noise like the clutch disc is freewheeling and hitting something. When I release the clutch the noise goes away. Little history. We had a doner car for the swap so I had most of the parts I needed. I used a stock clutch , resurfaced flywheel and new bearing. The first problem we had was bleeding the system so I replaced the master and slave cylinder, and was still a pain to bleed. Actually the noise started after the clutch was bled. Until then I had no pedal but no noise. After it was bleed I was to tight and I had no pedal play so I adjusted that and It helped some but still there. One question I had was is there a correct way for the pressure plate to go to the flywheel. There was nothing in the manual and the plate was not marked except for some writing on one side but i did notice the center hub was wider on one side. Could I have put the plate in backwards. I have done everything to this car from Bhg to major repairs but this is the first time doing a clutch since the car was a auto. Thanks for any help.

I was over there this afternoon and it almost sounds like a fairly metallic clutch grind... if that helps at all...

the clutch throwout bearing/hub assembly is a tricky SOB and if it's not assembled exactly it causes all sorts of issues...

got any pics at all from how it was done?

get the car in the air and pull the inspection plates off and get someone to push the clutch pedal in. The sound could be the fork touching the pressureplate, or it could be the sound of the snaprings on the hub assembly machining the retaining lip off :(

ok, when you pull the inspection plate off, you might be able to pull the fork out(depends on how tight it's in there and the slave). If the fork is hitting the pressure plate, it will be obvious on the fork. With the fork out you should be able to reach in there and see if the hub is still attached to the pressure plate.

If you can get a clear photo of the assemly I'll be able to tell you more than likely if something is amiss...

thnx will do that, we have been working on this for like 2 weeks and it took us 3 times to do the tranny, first we tried with a regular floor jack and balance the jack and slide the tranny in and couldnt get it in, then we thought that the R154 was like the w58 with the push type system and put it in wrong, then we tried to put it in the right way but were missing the hub washers in ring that was a pain, now we got everything in and the clutch wasn't disengaging right so it was grinding gears, so we went and got a new slave cylinder, that didn't work so we got a new master cylinder, that worked but then we dropped the car and got ready to take it out and the weird sound started but that was the clutch pedal adjustment, to we fixed that then it started to make another sound soo now we are careless for my school car show tomorrow again like last year:icon_mad: this stinks btw this is the son i am a die hard supra kid i used to work at Toyota as an apprentice then i quit lol:biglaugh: no more discounts
