lets say left drill bit gets my snapped bolts off, how do you clean the residue if it falls in the engine. Like the small bits of metal?

Well duh thats what the drill bit is for ?

Hommer you dork, LOL, he needs to get the bolts out before he does anything. With luck he wont have to helicoil at all.

You can use some heavy grease (wheel bearing grease works good) right at the spot around where you are drilling to catch the shavings (This can make it hard to see where you are drilling though, or mask off the area.

One last thing, when you are drilling....dont slipp off the bolt and tear of the head, it just makes things harder.

Humm let's see... He snaped bolts off in an Aluminum head and so far has not had good luck getting them out..I would guess the treads are not usable and will have to be helicoiled..9 out of 10x's when you torque something 10x's over the spec... umm usally one of the treads will give.. what you think ? the steel bolt or the aluminum head ?

And i would tape off all the areas around work area and use vacume to suck up the shavings...

Drill it tap it and helicoil it....

or if you get lucky and get them out.. and want to do the easy way out.. jb weld some studs in the messed up threads :}

Hommer, Im not disagreeing that he may indeed need to helicoil them in the end, Im just saying its USUALLY a good idea to put the "horse before cart"

And obviously the threads held up, otherwise there wouldnt be a part of a bolt stuck in it.

i'm trying everything i'll try helicoil and if that doesn't work then i'm welding that damn thing there cause its driving me nuts

Helicoil'ing is the process of replacing the threads in a stripped out bolt hole, for which you would need a "hole" to apply the process to, which you dont have, cause its full of a broken bolt bit.....therefore the reason you cant helicoil it in the first place....

Like I said, Hommer got the cart before the horse. First thing you need to do is get the bolt out.

breaking a drill bit off in it is going to compound matters thats for sure. Welding is out of the question unless you know how to weld aluminum and can find an aluminum stud. epoxy products are not likely to hold up as the repair will be under constant tension and I dont know of a product that can handle the heat/tension (even though its only 20 in/lbs) not to mention you probably dont have much depth in the hole to begin with.

Drilling out is really the only option I know of. Worst case scenario you have to pull the head off and take it to a place that can use a drill press on it. Im sorry, thats the best I got, maybe someone else has a different idea.

at this point id say take to a machine shop..

now if it was me.. I have a Mig so i would try to weld to end of drill bit then hopefully get a small nut near weld and weld that on and turn counterclockwise and pray drill bit came out...

if you can get to the drill bit use vice grips or anything to pull it out. if not, go dremel and be extremely careful about where your chips are flying.

i had a stripped bolt, broke off a hardened bolt extractor (cursed a good bit) and then used my dremel/craftsman rotary with a tungsten carbide bit to grind/cut all of it out til i could bend the bolt's threads away from the hole. it took a long time but all i had to do was run a tap through the hole again and it was still usable.
