2JZGTE VVTI from Aristo work in MKIII 5spd?

Hello! This is my first post.
First some background. I recently bought an 89 turbo MKIII with a 7MGTE and I haven't been able to get it started. It came with a brand new wire harness from the dealer, but the coils would spark sporadically and the injectors didn’t pulse. To remedy this I purchased a new ECU, cam angle sensor, and igniter and performed a compression test. I put piston one at TDC before installing the CAS. The car still wouldn’t start. I then retrieved diagnostic codes and 51 came up. TSRM stated that code 51 means “No IDL signal, NSW signal, or A/C signal to ECU during diagnosis”. I checked the wiring diagrams to troubleshoot this and found nothing wrong. I had some guys I know that are Toyota gurus check out the car and they had the same result. No start.

To make a long story short, I’ve had the car for a month and a half and still haven’t heard it running. I’m disappointed because I was looking forward to sticking with the 7M. But I’m fed up and looking to swap to a 2JZGTE. I’ll be selling all of the 7MGTE specific parts I have including the engine itself. I’d like to get a VVTI 2JZGTE from an Aristo. I know that a 2JZGTE that comes with an auto tranny can be used with a manual tranny. But I’m not certain of the VVTI. Can this be done? Does anyone have experience with this type of swap?

Thank you

vvti can be swapped into an mk3 yes, but the wiring i believe will be harder than a normal 1jz or 2jz swap.

I'll list the differences between the two swaps (1jz and 2jz) unless you are dead set on 2jzgte vvti.

1jzgte:

You can put a 1jz in your car for about $500-$1000 cheaper than you can a 2jzgte. It is also a little *tiny bit* more straight forward with wiring.

For a 1jzgte swap you will need these parts:

1jzgte clip from either Driftmotion, JARCO inc, Jhot imports (those are some good ones. Aaron from Driftmotion is a member on these boards)

1jzgte motor mounts - from your clip
1jzgte ecu (A/T or M/T) - from clip
1jzgte wiring harness - from clip
1jzgte TACH - from clip
custom oil sender unit from a vendor on the site here.
1jzgte bellhousing from M/T if you have a 5spd in your car
1jzgte flywheel
7mgte clutch/pressure plate
Either the hydro fan setup or electric fans.

When going 2jzgte, it will cost you a little bit more, it's a 3 litre engine compared to the 1jz's 2.5 litre. And most of the parts are the same that you will need.

You can either buy a usdm motor (costs more generally, but uses 550 injectors and steel turbos rather than the JDM's 440's and ceramic) Or you can buy a clip and sell what you don't need, but you will still have to pick up some parts.

1jzgte bellhousing (if your M/T)
1jzgte ecu/wiring harness
1jzgte motor mounts
1jzgte tach
1jzgte flywheel
7mgte pressure plate/clutch

On both motors, I BELIEVE* you will have to rewire the body plug or make a adapter harness to connect from the body to the ECU. You will also have to do something with the oil sender so your oil gauge works. EDIT: Also, you will need to do some things to get your A/C to work. Search button is your friend on this =D

If you have an Auto, I don't know.

JoeC,

Thank you for the information. You have been very helpful. I wasn't aware of the extra complexity of the 2JZGTE swap. I guess I'll stick to the 1JZ. I have to get the car running soon and the 1JZ seems like the proper fit.

Well, the 1jz is definantly a great engine. Just be prepared to spend about $4,000 for a complete swap, because little things always come up that need to be replaced on these old motors.

Your 100% best bet is to talk to BigAaron on the forums, This is the link to their part of the forum.http://www.supramania.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=97

They are a Forum sponsor here and specialize in 1jzgte swaps and are VERY knowledgable. Give Aaron or his partner a call and I am sure he will steer you the right way on how to get a clip and what to do with it.

Here's their actual website. http://driftmotion.com/

the vvti is a pita and limits things for you later on power wise. drop satan a pm as he used to have a vvti 2jz in his car and did the wiring

^^ He's correct. The 1jzgte came in the mk3 supra during a few years in Japan so the body plugs from the harness will connect with little to no modification. Though, the 2jzgte harness/ecu would have to be drastically modified.

Quick queston see if it has the auto harness if it is check if he did the neutral over ride trick another one is the starter cranking or is it a dead click.

But anyway a VVTI 2JZGTE will work wiring may be difficult.
