DonS1mpson;1060275 said:I'd just jump in and do it. I've been "learning" by reading these forums for christ knows how many years and yet learnt far more about engine swaps in a single weekend helping a buddy swap engines in a Miata. You can only learn so much from the internet.
Look up the 2JZGE-T swap if you haven't yet, a lot of people seem to be going down that route these days instead of the full blown GTE.
Good luck.

if i had all of the parts i could do a 2jzgte swap in two weekends. the most time consuming is wiring. throwing the engine in takes a couple of hours by myself and half the time with another person heh
bigaaron;1060145 said:Not really dude. 7m-ge to gte can be done with 100% of the parts taken from a single wrecking yard car or parts car and a $12 Chilton's manual from Autozone.
A 2jz swap needs way more in terms of wiring, custom parts, and installation experience. 7m-gte already came from the factory in a ma70, 2jz did not.
di_rosa;1060886 said:i disagree. everything involved in a 7mge-->7mgte swap is the same as swapping in a 2jz, except wiring, but that doesn't cost any money, just time in wiring in some a70 body connectors (whether you run it off a 1jz ecu or an aristo ecu).
p/s you are changing the high pressure line just like you would if you went 7mge-->7mgte
tranny you are changing if you would want it to last considering the w58 can't hold much, i don't care if 1 guy is holding 400rwhp on a w58, it won't last.
exhaust you would change just the same
i/c pipes are the same
so aside from some parts being more expensive like the bell housing, it's the same thing. there's no custom parts (aside from i/c pipes, but most people do custom i/c pipes with a 7mgte because they hate the stock plastic crap), just the wiring, and installation experience would be the same needed to do any kind of swap.
engine is an engine, bolt it up, do the wiring, done. even the engine/tranny bolts up like stock (on an 89), so it would seem it's meant to be in this chassis like stock.
yeah, you can't get these parts in a junkyard, but you'd STILL be buying parts from somewhere to make a 7mgte fit, so that's why i said it'll cost an extra $1500-$3000

When you said it was really easy and required nothing custom, I just didn't think that was accurate. I get phone calls every day from people asking questions about what is needed and how to do a 1jz or 2jz swap, and I always give them an honest idea of what they are in for. I think both of our opinions are right in their own ways, sorry if I came off all pissy about it.
