2JZ NA-T into MK3

OK, so I am swapping a 2J NA-T into my 1990 supra. I am not very far on the project yet and am going to need any help I can get. I purchased the 2J from RandJdistributing. The first thing I am going to do is to get the head off to look at the cylinder walls and inspect a few things. Here are a few pics. Also I noticed some writing on the cam shaft and on the harmonic balancer. I guess this engine may have been rebuilt. What do you guys think. Also what else should I inspect with the head off?

The 2jzge looks some much cleaner in a MKIII engine bay. I have a friend who is running it in his 91 MKIII. very nice job he did .

What do you guys make of the writing on the cam?

Perhaps the writing on the cams are from when the valves were re-shimmed? and the crank pulley could easily have been off to do a timing belt. Both could very well have been done as part of regular maintenance, I do find it dissapointing that LEXUS is misspelled though . I wouldn't sweat it. Good Luck!

looks like a nice 2jz outta the car. When i get a chance ima take out my 2jz & see how its doing since i haven't ran my car in awhile & im getting the tranny swapped, but have fun with that 2jz swap man. Makes me kinda glad sometimes that mines came swapped .

Good luck with the swap, I have a 2JGE block sitting around and it looks like it just rolled off the assembly line inside it. Amazingly clean and the crosshatch in the cylinder walls looked like it was just done. As Supra87t/T4 said, the writing is probably from a re-shim.

:3d_frown: I started to scrap off some of the block and noticed my tool was scratching up the block. This may not be good. Hope I can still use it without getting machine work done. What do you guys think. Also what is the best method to clean the block surface and the pistons?

Depends on how deep the scrathes are...

I used about 60 plus razor blades and its got my surface SMOOTH.

I don't think they are too deep. After some more scraping they went down a little. Is it OK to use some Wet/Dry sandpaper and a block of wood to smooth things out?

Should be fine IMO, thats how mine looked. I'm a little too free and easy tho. If its going to bother you, I'd definately get it taken care of, its not worth driving yourself crazy over.

You cant be anal about engine work, not that you are, but small scratches, tiny dust particles, etc will all blow out when running If its something deep, you will know. Its pretty much that obvious to where you are aware it needs machining. We have gaskets for a reason!

Are you pulling the pistons out? The easiest/best method I found for cleaning the carbon deposits off the pistons was to take them and sit them upside down in a vat of B12 Chemtool for about 5 minutes or so. It will clean them up nice.

Spray chemtool cleans the block up nice too

I am trying to keep the bottom end together and not touch it. I will inspect it but don't want to take it apart. I think you guys are right, I might be too anal about it. I just wanted to make sure I am doing the right thing. BTW i cleaned up the pistons fairly easily with some carb cleaner and a small wire brush.

You have got the right attitude! I basically jsut finished the EXACT same thing your doing right now, jsut with a 7m. I changed the head gasket, and cleaned up the pistons, ect ect without touching the bottom end.

Take your time, dont take any short cuts, and make sure YOUR satisfactory with what your doing.
