I am a complete noob, but sometimes a noob's opinion is good because I see it in more simple terms than you guys. And I wont say this because I did the 1JZ swap, but because it's a conclusion everyone can get by reading this thread.

1JZ swap - at least a couple/few thousand bucks cheaper than 2JZ swap. As someone stated, the 2JZ has more stock power, and more potential (duh!). Now, look what bigaaron stated ... 1JZ bolts into place, everything is easy to install, all stock parts fit in perfectly, easy swap, no complications, no custom stuff needed, it looks stock, mostly because it CAME stock in JZA70 cars. Now, the way I see it, it goes like this:

Even if you DO have the $$$ for the 2JZ swap... why not swap a stock-like 1JZ, and with all the $$$ you're saving, you can start modding it? I mean, people talk about "peak power" as if the 1JZ could only handle 300HP... but haven't I heard of people putting out even 500 or more on stock internals? What do you guys call "serious power"?? A 9 second car? ... Don't get fooled by the people who insist on saying that 2.5 liters isn't enough, that's crap! =)

The reason i went (still installing) 2jz:

1.) Always wanted to, this is not my first 2j motor... but this is the first i am going through with.. (Graduated College and have $$ for the first time, first run i was brizoke and finishing up FFI 7MGTE project.... so no 2j, sold it and moved to nyc)

2.) Elvis (Satan) got a sweet deal that I couldnt pass. (Although i did find motor/tranny's cheaper than the clip, but i wanted a clip)

3.) I, like Elvis am not going for super crazy 2jz god power..... I think i am going for more power than satan, because i am going single off the bat and a few other upgrades... but for now 400hp is a great goal.... but i will be going with a gt35 in a few months.... because i want it.

4.) My supra has been one fun project, but I decided im going to do one last big change... and what better way to go out than a JZ engine, i just happened to do it with a 2J, my preference.... i love the 1jz (kelly...aka psifactor has a 1jz here in Largo (Tampabay) that is awesome, and bucsfanatic (Brad) is going 2.5tt at the moment, there are some awesome 1j cars in town and now i will join them with a 2j (although i think kelly will be putting out serious power!!!)

My intentions are a nice 400-500hp car,

I dont street race
I dont drag race
I dont road race
I dont drift
I just enjoy driving, and thats what im building my car for.

I say you build the car you want, with the engine you want and take pride in your work.

p.s. if my 7M didnt die on me id still be 7M.... i loved that motor and the power!

well i have head that the 1jz motor has tooken up to 40psi, wit of course basic nessecity, stand alone, fuel system, etc.... but the guy i work with (my uncle) know 2jz like the back of his hands, he has been working with 2jz since they came out in 1993 (My Uncle Has Installed A 2jzgte In Many Cars, He Was The First Recoreded Person To Put The 2jz 6 Speed In The Cressida Back In 92-93....and The Cressida Was An 84...so He Said He Can Do It With No Problem....the 1jz 5 Speed Clip Is Runnin Me 2600, And The Aristo Auto Is Running Me The Same Price Is Running Me About 3500 Everything Plus A Zex Nos Kit, With Computer..everything But I Need A Rear Sump Oil Pan For The 2jzgte... If Any1 Has One!!!!!) well down time ill be looking at is almost a week tops! well thanxs for your info, i just prefer to do a 2jzgte because of it avaibltiy in parts in america, im going to leave it stock, until i can pay off the loans to get the car running...
thanx i should hopefully start this weekend (sunday!!!) i hope!!!

Choice is easy man!
1JZ-GTE came in mk3 will bolt in and can be had for as cheap as $800 with trany sensors and ecu. Parts are cheaper and 280hp jumps up a lot with maybe 4-5x what u put in your complete 1jz. For example under drive pully set for 2jz adds 20hp water system upgrade themistat with 2jz water pump housing adds hp. "y" pipe & 3"dp and simple mods to get your engine well into 350-400hp range even adding methonal water injection safer then nos and its cheap yes its washer fluid will add 70-100hp stage 1 kit and you can boost more with cooler intake gases! way better then nos man there is so much for the 1jz. 2jz is way to expensive and hyped up.

One other thing to note:
Is stock 1jzgte revs higher is only 2.5 ltrs produces 280hp 112HP/LTR 2jzgte 3.0ltr produces stock 320hp 106.6HP/LTR so based on factory specs the 1jz is more fficient at hp per ltr unmoded

specs from
"http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z899/Toyota_Supra%20MKIV/default.aspx"

2jz unless automatic will be boring stick with manuel 6speed and it will cost 20X above 1jz upgraded cost.

now onto smog laws if there is a smog in your region get a friend in hi places you will need him on this dept. no smog worrys the 1jz is good. Smog problems then go 2jz it can be reffed and legal by smog laws cuz newer engine and sold in usa.

The 1JZ-GTE came in the A70 chassis. It will bolt right in and can be had for as cheap as $800. The engine with the transmission, sensors, ecu, and other necessary parts are cheaper then a 2jz. It makes 280whp stock, and it can make a lot more power then that with the right modifications.

For example:
*A under drive pulley set for 2jz adds 20hp.
*A cooling system upgrade with a 2jz water pump housing costs only about $200.
*An exhaust system with y pipe, dp, and other simple mods can get your engine well into 350-400whp range!
*Adding methanol water injection is safer then nos and less expensive. (Yes, its a modified windshield washer fluid sprayer, but it will add 70 to 100hp to your 1jz!) You can boost more with cooler intake temps! It is way better then nos!

Man, there are so many more possibilities for the 1jz. The 2jz is far too expensive and, in my humble opinion, hyped up.

A 2jz with a 6 speed will be boring, stick with a R154 or it will be 20X all the prices I listed previously.

Now, on the subject of smog laws, you might need some friends to do your 1jz smog on the "down low". The 2jz can be taken to the referee and made into a legal swap, because the engine was origional equipment in a vehicle sold in the US.

(Loosely translated for you) :icon_wink Punctuation and grammar are your friends.

Yeah... doin' the work myself and adding some goodies... still not at the ~$3500 mark (but werkin' on it ;-).

Cassio,
I am looking to use the Apexi Speed cut defense deal, which will give me an accurate MPH/RPM reading, as well as send out the right signals to the ECU, etc... for going auto (using the Aristo's tranny's electronics). I don't think you have to worry about that, but just wanted to let ya know that there are several ways to overcome any signal source or destination issues you may have from any sensors...

Matter of fact, I went from 5-speed to auto and sent my JZA70 bellhousing to Cassio... why? Because now, I drive in bumper-to-bumper traffic and having it auto suits my wants/needs.
Automatic FTW!!:biglaugh:

a knock leaves you 2 options if its serious but, drive it till it dies have fun with it!

depends top end or bottm end?

bottom end --> get a 2jz long block build a 1.5jzgte
top end --> just get another engine by itself for $600-$800

so for 2k you have fun and drive right away 600-800 later its like new again! what more can you ask for it takes verry little to get 300 rwhp out of a 1jz just look at it this way a new 2006 infinity g35 has about 300crank hp and cost over 30k for a car that your getting for under 3k:icon_bigg

We have a 1jz longblock available for $800. Doesn't even have the timing belt sticker on it yet. It's so new that all the pcv hoses are still soft!

WAY too much to order from Japan, you could probably buy a JDM engine for less :icon_bigg
