I vote for a walk off!! If youve ever watched zoolander.

Ive never driven a 1jz auto car, but my 7mgte auto sucked pretty hard off the line. It was real fast at 10 psi after 30 ish, but off the line was very slow. If it was me getting a 1jz auto, i would get a 4.3 LSD rear from a sport package NA, or at least a 3.xx something. The stock auto rear is very tall

Nice to get back on subject.

You hit it on the head. The car doesn't come off the line as hard as I would like, and leaves me playing catch-up. I already have a 4.30 lsd, and you're right it helps off the line, but it still doesn't leap out of the hole.

My thinking in considering this swap is:

If I ran a higher stall speed converter with the 1jzgte I would be able to rev the crap out of it and hold first gear longer then I currently can due to the 7m's limited rpm capability (especially with the 4.30 lsd).

Since I don't know anyone running a 1jz with a high stall speed converter it's pretty much all theory as far as I know. Probably would also need stand-alone, or at least ECU mod to eliminate or re-adjust rev limiter to get the benefit out of this set-up

One more thing...

Where I race most of the time (Irwindale Speedway), has changed their emphasis and promotion to 1/8 mile drags for street legal cars.

Despite being used to 1/4 mile, I must admit that 1/8 for street is pretty damn fun. Plus, that's what's available to me without driving a long distance, or waiting to race the now less frequent 1/4 mile events.

Needless to say, you gotta be fast off the line to win a 1/8 mile race.

A stall converter would help a lot in the 1/8th mile, or any accleration for that matter. There is a guy nosechnks on here who has a pretty fast turbo/auto, and theweezl. But, dont quote me on this, I think under small loads they still work the same as regular converters. I would check. Like i think it will still engage at the same rpm, or at least start to. The only time i would really prefer an auto is with a big torquey motor, like a v8 or one of the bigger 6s. But come to think of it, ive only really owned 2 auto cars, and there the ones I have now, my 2.8 camaro and my 924

It sounds to me like you guys weren't trying to hate your transmission enough when you were/are racing. Every time I would race someone when I had the 7m I left the hole slow only because the shit wasn't hooking.

The stock stall is enough for stock twins on a 1J, they spool really quick, and if you're foot braking it and holding the e-brake on some decent tires it will hold boost, I think I remember being able to hold at least 5 or 6 pounds when I still had stock twins and that was on an uprepped street with stiff ass street tires.

Maybe you should consider something like what IJ.'s running as far as a higher stall...

Yeah, a high stall speed converter feels pretty much like a regular torque converter under normal driving, but when you hold the brake and the gas down it allows the engine to rev higher before locking up and overcoming the brakes.

Problem is they work best if they're totally dialed in to the characterisitics of whatever motor your're using. And because they are fairly expensive and labor intensive to remove and install, it would suck to have to experiment with two or three of them til I get it right. But maybe that's just the way it is if I can't get the info on what stall speed will be best before I do the build.

Anybody who knows?

Ill let you know when I switch to an auto in a year or so. BTW, if you are on stock twins, 4.30s are a godsend (except for highway 70mph=3krpm)
