I was just wondering if its possible to stretch the harness or do i really have to extend it, i really don't want to if i don't have to. How many people in here extended or just stretched it?

Please inform us as to how you intend to 'stretch' metal wires 18 inches longer. Whoever gave you that idea needs to be :slap:

Honestly if it was possible to 'stretch' it, why would anyone bother extending it? Yes it's a pain, but this is an engine swap we're talking about. If you want a walk in the park, then go for a walk in the park.

Basically you have 3 legitimate options:
  1. Extend it yourself. Cut, solder, and heat shrink about 100 wires.
  2. Enlarge the speedometer cable hole and run the harness through the dash instead of across the firewall. You will still have to extend and modify the body plugs. There have been recent discussions on this, just search.
  3. Buy a harness that's already been extended (from Dr. Tweak etc).

or you can cut the firewall and route the harness under the dash, i hear it works that way as well.

I didn't mean literally stretch but thanks for the reality check. I was just asking how everyone else did it so i could see if there was more than one option.

It's easy to stretch it. Put both ends in a vice grip and pull in the middle. Duh.

Just like microwaving a can of soup: "Popping sounds may occur. They are normal."

mobes in post 2 pretty much said your only options. I guess it depends on if you are good with wiring or you have money to get the harness extention from Dr Tweak.

I would love to do that, but i'm soo broke its not even funny. My buddy is pretty good at wiring, he's got a few swaps under his belt so me and him were gonna do the wiring. I was just going to see if anyone drilled thru their firewall so they wouldn't have to lengthen their harness.

I did one swap where I extended it and one where I came throught the fire wall. As far as which one worked better it was about the same but through the firewall was easiest.

Don't forget to use shielded wire on O2 and knock sensors, thats where most people creat problems.

i opened up my speedocable and made a jumper harness using the 1j bosy connectors from the clip and using the 7m engine harness connectors from and made it about 2 feet long and it plugged up perfectly. however if u dont have the clip then this could present a problem. but the jumper harness was cake to make. i did mine in just a few hours.

I'm thinking about going thru the firewall because i don't want to risk messing something up while extending knowing my luck. So you drilled a hole next to the speedo cable one? How hard was it to reach under the dash and pull it thru? Did it give you enough room to play with?

lengthen the harness and put the ecu where it belongs
i use the wires from my 7mgte motor and i had a spare harness from another 7m motor you need more sheilded wire then what's in (1) 7m harness if you do that radio shack shielded wire is thin
as for putting it under dash if there is a safe space under there to put it then do it
i have been searching the site and i find no pics of someone doing it
i only hear of people doing it that's all
