1JZ VVTI conversion

This has been a great forum for me as I am faced with rebuilding my 7m that has melted pistons and head, putting in a stock JDM 1j with twins or a 1j vvti.
Each option is going to run about the same money. I will likely go with a microtech standalone setup as this is what the local shops here use and tune.

I would not mind keepin my 7m but like the high rev limits of the 1j. I have also talked to alot of 1j owners who would never go back to 7m.

Between the 2 1j's, I would have to be inclined to go with NON-VVTI.

My reasoning -

-If I am putting something like this in my car the odds are that it is not going to stay stock and I have searched high and low for vvti upgrades.

-Generally it is believed that they have weaker rods and I dont want to do the bottom end after the engine is in.

-Cheap 7m bolt ons would get me close to the benefiets of the vvti without having to swap motors.

What I would like to see debated now is whats the cost differance of putting in a 1j vs. a 2j?

Initial engine purchase price is the only real difference that I've seen. Since quite a few of the parts are identical the costs come out roughly the same. I'm only doing 1.5J because I got the 2J for a song.

if price/hp is what you're after. a ford 4.6 modular can be had for under $1000, and with a $4000 KB supercharger you can be over 800hp.

japanese cars are NOT where the value is at for hp.

going rate for a 95 mustang GT is about $8000. supercharger for $3500 and you're at 500hp, $10 pulley and you can push up past 800 before you're into real threats with the bottom end.

compared to a mark4 (about the same age and performance) that's pretty damned cheap.

on a fox body mustang, you can get the car for about $2000, and the supercharger is $3000 for a 5.0L now the gains aren't as huge, you're only into 350rwhp at that point, but that's still cheaper than alot of people here pay for a STOCK mk3.

much as I hate to admit it, Camaro's can be even cheaper, L98 Chevy is about the cheapest motor in the world to make fast, even in basic NA form you can hit 500hp on all factory parts. We're not talking bolt ons anymore tho, you'd have to have knowledge to be able to tear down and rebuild the motor in order to do that (not that it's a complex motor to tear down and rebuild, but still, we'll assume that the "average" owner of a supra wouldn't be capable of it.)

SOoooooooooooooooo, if you wanna try to tell me that done over a long timespan, with lots of time to look for deals, a supra can be in the same field as a mustang/camaro... I'll take that, I really will, it's part of why I bought the car, I thought it wouldn't be MUCH more expensive to make, and I liked the way it felt mid-corner.

but I don't think it's possible to get a better hp/$ ratio than that in any japanese car I've seen.

$3500 for a supercharger kit? My 1JZ Sard twin kit was $1000 cheaper, and with just 550cc injectors it made 524whp on a 1J block (I'm on 2J). $2500 for a 240HP gain is good. $3500 for less of a gain.... Come on man.

A .57 trim on a stock 7M with FCD and SAFC, open downpipe can make 360whp. That's less than $1000, and can even fit in a walbro in that price. $1000 for a 200whp gain, pretty good.

Most hondas with just a turbo kit raise their HP by 100%. You can find a complete used kit for less than $1200. Heck, buy a CRX for $500, build a motor for $3500 with new axles, buy a good turbo kit for $2000, fuel and engine management $1000, make 500whp with slicks and run high 10's, low 11's. All for $7,000. with a built engine you know will last.

Even the $4000 lexus SC300's, spend $6000 more, and have a 600-700HP monster. That's a 400-500HP gain for $6000 done right.

Price per HP.... My stock 7M ran a 16.5 at the track the first time I went. I then gutted my cats in my DP, ran it open, K&N drop in filter, FCD, $15 MBC, went back, ran a 14.1. That's less than $150 to drop 2.5 seconds on the stock turbo.

You still don't think it's possible?

Install VVT-i which came off a 280HP engine, put it on another 280HP engine.... Spend $1000-3000 to do it right with ECU wiring, what have you. Gain 10hp..... WTF?

VVT-i is STILL not worth the money for HP gained.

ok, you've got solid points and solid numbers that I can't fault. And ya I agree completely, the VVT-i isn't the most cost effective hp gain out there, but that's not really what the mod is about.

using 1jz numbers isn't really fair tho, as that swap was far from free. unless you're fortunate enough to be in a place where they came stock with that motor. I do see you're point tho and I'll concede that it's a damned good one.

My favorite fast mustang was the red one on the fast and ferious 2.
Nah the only mustange worth putting money into is the old ones like elinore gone in 60 seconds smog exempt and verry collectable.

Why spend over $5000 for a mustange that needs 120+ octane gas all the time to run on to get 500-800hp.

I love the fact that when i want good milage and cheap gas i just turn down the boost and drive my car in low hp mode for dailey driving. Something you can not do with a rustange that cost $5000.

I think i will stick with a supra though.

4 grand? Shittt... My business partner John just got a 93 Black on Tan SC300, 5 speed (yes thats right!) for $2700 with an upgraded clutch, drilled rotors, some other goodies.

The car is in good condition, normal wear for a 1993. The motor ran like crap, the car would missfire and not go over 40mph. He bought another complete 2JZGE for $75 just in case (yet again shows how cheap sc300's are), but when we were diagnosing, we found about a gallon of water in the spark plug galley. We wet-dryed the water out, put new plugs and wires in, and the car hauls ass, gets sideways in 2nd. The owner thought he blew the motor because it blew an upper rad hose wouldnt run right since he replaced it. Coolent just flew up into the spark galley and was grounding out the plugs.

It will be single 1JZGTE by the end of the month lowered with deep dish rims, new black paint, and 98 front bumper. He also has a real rhd MR2 swapped with a gen3 motor and other upgrades.

I've picked up good running clean car-fax SC300's for $1200 (auto).
