The bellhousing and flywheel aren't too bad to find, you can usually order them from toyota japan. I can't even imagine trying to find a 1j vvti ECU though or any vvti engine specific components. Also, since the vvti 1j didn't come in the supra you're in for alot more work in wiring at the very least.

You may also want to reconsider running vvti if you plan on turning up the boost because I hear that the rods are weaker in that engine. In any case i'm sure the vvti will present additional complications when modding.

You'll never find an ECU unless you buy one new if it's missing.

As far as the wiring goes, it will be a PITA, but theres a few VVTI 1JZ sc300's floating around, its not too bad.

Yes, the rods break at around 400whp.

The vvti from what I understand is also a pain when you go to porting the head or to get different cams, but this is again all here say from mk4 people I know. I'd get a 1jz and swap bottom ends for a 2jz or just get a 2jz if I was going to go through the trouble.

You should be a member. They've been modifying 1JZ's since they rolled off the toyota assembly line. Their advice is well beyond anything you can learn off supraforums.

you could pay 1800 ad get a good standalone for it with display such as wolf v500.

You could waste money like that, but why? So you can have VVT-i? Not worth it. If it were, there would be more VVT-i equipped cars in this world? I think so. It still seems like a poor investiment, unless it's a completely stock ECU powered factory car vs. stock non-vvt-i car.

That isn't saying anything at all.

That is about as logical as the editors of Hot Rod magazine that called the introduction of sequential electronic fuel injection on the 5 litre Mustang, the end of performance. Just because the benifits of its superior design has not sunk in yet, does not mean it isn't good.

Breaking rods has nothing to do with variable cam timing.

No, they break rods due to a weaker design thats EASILY fixed by just using stock GEN2 rods/pistons that you can pick up anywhere for pocket change.

Heck, you can pickup a whole gen2 chaser motor and use the bottom end for under $500. Non VVTI 1jz's are proven to around 1000whp on the stock bottom end. Someone that posts here can verify a 1JZ in Miami did 1080whp on the stock bottom end.. At least i know he posts on SF. (smiley). It blew up on the drive home tho lol
