Whats up guys..im new to these boards but just got together a 1jz in a 91 240sx coupe...my question is after 1 bar the ecu cuts boost so i have been looking for and found 'tuned' ecu's from blitz and whatnot and wanna know if these can be trusted, what to look for and the like...
just for fyi, 1jz, r154 tranny, spec stage 3 clutch, greddy intercooler, tial bov, stock twins which i think are on thier way out, trust downpipe, exhaust blah blah blah
Any help would be appresiated thanks...oh and i know its a 240, not a supra...but hey what can i say, toyota makes the best engines in my op!!!

Blitz and mines are excellent! I ran a blitz for about a year before my caps blew. :( Definitely redo your caps before you use it. NO MATTER WHAT! My 500 dollar ecu dropped to zero because i didn't do them in time. Blew up the boards traces. :(

You also might want to think about an aftermarket ecu. Megasquirt and Stinger are available for under a grand or around a grand. It just depends what you want. If you want to stay stockish, then just get a fuel computer. Many guys go into the 400rwhp range with them. :) Good luck!

Also, Search is your friend :) Use it!

thanks man
drove around today, alittle road trip to a drift event...the car ran great untill i wanted to put my foot in it. It runs its a$$ off but boost cuts at 1 bar...can i just put a manual boost controller on it dialed to 12-13psi to keep it from cutting? Its so agrivating, i cant even run a gear out with out it cutting. Anyone else have this problem and what did you do?

My 1JZ had the same issues. The boost just increased itself because of the free flowing exhaust and intake. I tried the manual boost controller, but dialing to the lowest setting was the "stock" boost setting, which had increased itself...so no help there.

Getting yourself an HKS Fuel Cut Defencer or an aftermarket ECU (I run a Blitz Access ECU, have been using it for over a year now) will solve your problem. I recommend the aftermarket ECU route because you'll kill multiple birds with one stone. I got ride of boost cut, speed cut, and much better A/F ratios. Most of the time you'll also get a raised rev-limiter. I, however, did not...same old 7,200rpms for me.

where can i find a blitz ecu other then ebay...i have found a couple but after talking with the sellers they couldnt give me any solid info on the unit (specs, cap condition etc)...and these go for around 500 roughly, yes??
oh and no can do on silencers on my exhaust... trust 3" downpipe to all 3" stainless back to two n1 style dual tips...plus adding back pressure would negate the benifits of the exhaust right?

Yeah, they usually go for about 500. I really need to get mine fixed. 2 traces got hurt on the board when the cap blew. I know it is reparable, i just havent found the right guy to do the job.

Hitting boost cut.
How would increasing back pressure of the exhaust successfully correct the ECU's overboost issue? All i can imagine is that it actually just reduces your maximum boost, thus sorta stopping the boost cut, but it just is a band aid, not a fix. You have to remap the fuel tables to correct this, that requires an aftermarket ECU or a fuel computer to trick your stock ecu.

I'm new also- getting close to settling a deal on a 1jz mkiii. I'm planning on doing some bpu's but would like to avoid fuel cut. I have read about FCD and BCCs but I don't like the idea of tricking the ECU and I'd like to go big single down the road.

I have also read that a AFC or other tuner will solve the fuel cut issue. I understand how the FCD method works- but how does a tuner work in "tricking" the ECU without the negative effects of leaning it out? I just don't see how adjusting the fuel map will remove the fuel cut? Looking for a more technical explanation here...

And second question- is a boost controller even necessary if you don't want to go over the 14psi (or whatever the BPU's increase it to)? What whp would you be looking at around 14psi with BPU's (full exhaust, intercooler+hard pipes, intake)?

I would say it would be luck without a boost controller. Some people are able to hit 14 without a boost controller, but i personally never was. I have to turn it on to go beyond 12. So you can get the 1j all setup and see, but i would recommend a boost controller, because at one point you will need one.

Ok- that makes sense.

But what I'm wondering about really is the fuel tuner and fuel cut question- does it prevent fuel cut, and if so- how does it do it?

Thanks

It really does trick the computer. It tells the computer something and then it tells your injectors something else. The computer is happy because it is within specs and you are happy because you are boosting high :)

yeah I read somewhere else that the SAFC basically does the same thing that a FCD or BCC does... It just keeps the MAP signal just under 5 volts (5 volts=fuel cut at whatever the max psi is).

So what I'm thinking now is to just get a BCC, boost controller, and A/F gauge to keep an eye on things.

I just want a good set-up for BPU's. Obviously with a big single you'd want more control to tune.

Just so you know, A/F gauge is a wideband. good luck. I run a zeitronics one, but there are other options.
