just bought this supra a couple weeks ago from johnnyredline. Car ran great till today. Just changed the rear brakes and when i started it up and let it idle for a while it started smoking like crazy. Alot of white thick smoke out the exhaust and turbo. car seems like it runs fine though. not overheating or sputtering. Could it be just the turbo seals? Bad headgasket? Brake fluid burning? I was planning on rebuilding the engine anyway but not for a couple months.

any thoughts?
oh yea the car is 1jz obviously with
TO4R (garrett turbo w/66.5mm compressor/.68ar turbonetics exh housing)
apexi power fc w/boost control kit
rs*r gt2 exhaust 3" from muffler to turbo
c's short shifter
tial 40mm wastegate w/external dump
chinaman manifold
aeromotive fpr
jawsgear 1 piece aluminum driveshaft
innovate lc-1 wideband/datalogger
walbro 255
jdm 440cc injectors

I'd almost say Headgasket as its white smoke meaning coolant, but coolant can come from a number of places to, does it overheat? make the waterfall noise on startup? do a compression and leak down test too.

Bad smoke at idle?

Sounds like the turbo is dead to me.

Maybe you just noticed it now because it's the first time you let it idle for a little while.

I don't think he blew his HG between doing his brakes.

But it is definately possible that when he let the car idle for longer than he had before, he now noticed that it is smoking.

I've had plenty sets of blown turbos and they all smoked pretty bad at idle. It's not too bad when you first notice it and unless you're sitting in traffic, you might never know until it's worse. And the smoke was white. Yes, i know blue = oil but it can look white too.

I'm sticking with the turbo is blown.

that is possible also. if the smoke is white then you can also check by puuting hand at muffler tip and smell the exhaust on your hand. if it smells sweet then it is the head gasket. i am also a technician at a dealership and have seen many blown head gaskets.

Just pressure test your cooling system and that is the best way to rule out the chance of a blown head gasket. It should hold pressure, what ever the cap is rated at 15-20psi and if the pressure drops then pull out your spark plugs and look into the cylinders and you will see that they are wet above the piston. That will tell you that you have a blown head gasket for sure. Chances are your turbo seals are gone since your car is not overheating.

Turbo seals.
When oil gets on a hot surface the smoke will be white not blue anymore. Coolant from a bhg will give a mist of white smoke, not thick white smoke like he described.

i drove the car last night becuase i figured if it is just the turbo seals i was going to see if it spooled ok. after making a cloud throughout the town it stopped smoking after 10 minutes of driving. Now all i get is a little grey smoke sometimes if i let it idle for a while. Turbo spooled fine up to 17 psi. So far no more white smoke.

i will prob take it to a shop anyway sometime this week to get a compression test done just to get that out the way.

thanks for all your help anyway.

small amounts of burnt oil is blue, LARGE amounts is whiteish.

that sucks if it was blown when he sold it but who knows. good luck man

So when you're driving the car it drives fine? Check your ECU. Check all the capacitors in your ECU. My car is doing that too. Once you start driving it and keep it at hi rpm it's fine. when it sits and idles it will start to smoke. The capacitor is bad on mine and is doing the same thing. check your ecu.

My car smoked when the ECU went bad

I don't think that's his problem cuz there wasn't THAT much smoke and it was obviously fuel cuz the smell

I was just answering Rich's question, I guess I missed the part about "white" smoke o_O

this is what bad caps on the ecu sounds and looks like. the car would sound like a dying whale. oh btw dont mind those hondaz in the background revving their engine. they were just jealous.

driftmotion did a great job reaplacing the caps.
