Since I will be driving my supra on a daily basis I need a more reliable engine than a 7m with 166k miles. I dont know much about 1j or 2j so for those of you who do know...which one is more reliable?

You will be hung up, tar'd and feathered for this one.............:biglaugh:

They're both great motors so you will need to search and make your own decisions. I love my 1jz, but I've never owned a 2jz.

I heard somewhere on SF that the materials used in the 2jz are higher quality and can withstand higher temperatures without failure than the 1jz. Dont quote me on it though!

what about the 7m? how reliable are they? and also with 166k on it do you think it can survive long distance drives? lets say something like 4-5hr going and coming back?

rebuild 7m, if your taking it on such long drives youll like the power band of the 7m more. 7m could go on forever if you didnt have to worry about stopping to refuel or change oil.

I stock form the mileage is about the same, depending on how heavy your foot is. If your foot is light, mid 20's. If your foot is heavy, mid teens. BTW, run premium gas in your motor (trust me, I've fried 2 7M's by using 87). You need make sure your head has been properly re-torqued. The factory specs are too low. I can't remember what the propper torque specs are, but you can search and find them easily. The JZ series motors are very reliable, but each has their inherint flaws (7M blows HG's and has a poorly designed oil pick-up, the 1J blows its stock twin turbos, and I'm not sure about the 2J).

there are plenty of people with 200k+ miles on their 2jz's, with turbos. just as many out there w/ the non turbo 2j's. im not sure if the 1j's get used enough to get that many miles. they dont drive as much in japan so a high mileage 1jz isnt nearly as common as high mileage 2j's. we already know there are high mileage 7M's. my first mk3, a 91, had 163k on the stock motor. so, the 7M can be just as reliable as anything else if properly maintained and not abused. it only blew up after i beat on it. that was me being ignant.

the power curve of a 7M is more street friendly than a 1jz, thats for certain. the bottom end grunt that sits you back in the seat happens almost 1000rpm sooner on a 7M than a 1jz. ive built and tuned both kinds of cars. i prefer the 7M for the torque and the sound. but i prefer the 1jz for the efficiency, reliability(fool-proofness) and smoothness at elevated rpm's.

That's a pretty good post, but I like my 1j better than I liked my 7m. I love the way it sounds better, I'm not scared to get on it all the time like I was with my 7m. I picked and chose when I got on my 7m for fear of rodknock or bhg. I didn't say I would have got one of those, just that I was scared I would have. I didn't build my 7m so I didn't know how well it was put together. I was making 406rwhp when it got a bad case of the knock knocks. I daily drive my 1j at 452 rwhp, and I never have negative thoughts or fears when I'm driving it. That's just my opinion of the two.

I've had the pleasure of having all 3..

The 7m modded or stock gets ~ 18-20 around town for me and 22-23 on the highway
The 1jz got about 17-18 and ~22 (didn't do many trips with it) on the highway (my buddy is getting 26-27 on the highway with his)
By far the 2jz was the best though imo
around town got ~20 mpg and highway got 25+

In fact driving around town I could easily keep up with traffic without breaking -100 mmhg on my avcr.. that thing was hardly ever in boost around town (unless i wanted to :) )

the 2jz is the best of both worlds.. but better in all aspects :)
