Hi there I have just put a 1jz-vvti into my car and im having some kind of issue :aigo:

The engine turns over and fires, starts up fine them dies 2 seconds later. However if I unplug them AFM it idles no worries.
The car is a Nissan so the fuel pump is pretty much wired directly. Hopefully its a simple fix, im going to start looking over everything and ruling out
possible causes. Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks all

When the AFM is unplugged the car runs in "emergency fail-safe" mode... basically it runs off fuel maps based on RPM and TPS, and ignores the airflow. It will run that way, barely, but it's not safe (for the engine) to drive it like that and it probably runs very poorly.

If plugging the AFM in causes problems, you either have the wrong AFM, wiring messed up, or there's a problem with the intake (an air leak) after the AFM. A vented BOV can cause a leak, so will a hose off, a bad gasket, or hoses being hooked up wrong. You should also have the valve cover breather hooked up to the pre-turbo intake pipe after the AFM (or it causes an unmetered air leak through the crankcase PCV system).

If the engine was a JDM "swap" that you ordered there's a high chance the AFM is the wrong one, check the part number. I don't know what it is though, sorry.

Otherwise the air leak is the most likely cause.

If that all fails, check your ECU for leaking capacitors.

Good luck.

Check for stored codes. Tho you might have afm code from unplugging it.

Can you keep it running with throttle?

The first thing you should do is clean the AFM.
If that doesnt work then you have a leak.
If that also doesnt work get a 2jzgevvti or gtevvti AFM.
And for the final solution get a clean and complete 2jzgtevvti harness, that's what we did.

Thanks for the replys, im nearly positive its the right AFM- I just remembered I have had it running with the AFM plugged the first time I fired it up but at the time I didn't have my hose claps done up from my intercooler piping.
This makes me think it has something to do with the idle control? How ever saying that when I start it with the AFM plugged if I press on the throttle it still dies.
My wiring could be the cause there is a few things im going to try when I finished work tonight

Update : After pulling all the wires out and doing a clean up I noticed that I had forgotten to ground 1 wire. So Im going to re wire everything and make it tidy and see if that gets me anywhere

I rewired everything and put an air filter on and it idles perfect now (with afm plugged in) everything seems perfect but as soon as I touch the throttle it dies...
still need to figure out why but at least progress is being made :)
