I did a search and couldn't find a thread like this, I hope it wasn't just user error. My Dad ran across a thread like this in a 300ZX forum and he got several good tips for his car...

So..what kinda stuff is out there that you can tweak or modify at little or no cost and also it be safe to do?

you shimmed your 1j wastegates? How's that working out for you.

If my engine wasnt already in, and it wasnt a freakin bitch to get to the rear turbo i might try it.

when I said jew boost, I meant a bleeder T mod though :]

Just open her up. There is no need to shim the wastegates. With full exhaust and intake mods, you should hit 14-15 anyway.

After that, ECU and cams are on order, but those are expensive options. Finally get the intake charge as COLD as possible. That means cold air intake and/or IC upgrade. Raising boost can be a NO NO without cooling the charge, and can quickly lead you to a "I need to replace my engine" post.

very true

ask me how I know

yeah, youre right about the non issue on the shims. I wasn't thinking clearly. alot of cars free'd up exhaust and intake will hit fuel cut sometimes. I haven't had that issue, yet luckily

Yeah it's a bitch to get to but you do it before you put the motor in. It's working fine. I just don't wanna test my own luck with the 1 bar of pressure threshold the exhaust side has. I have an HKS intake I believe that is as "cold air" as it gets. I may take the spare hood I have from the clip and see if I can find a conservative yet functional scoop that does NOT stick up far at all and mount it behind the headlight over the intake. I just haven't looked into that yet. I am only thinking maybe an inch or so tall and a few inches deep and about as wide as the headlight.

if you just have the HKS kit, its not cold air exactly.

cold air would be running the filter behind your foglight out of the engine bay or something.

If not behind the foglight, fashion yourself a heat shield for the intake, that'll help too, if you can get a pretty tight seal to the hood. I think supraracer01 did that...

most common mod ive seen is taking something like 4" pvc or dryer hose and running air from the front foglight housings into the intake

edit: dont use the rear foglight housings...damn, i just got owned by me.
