How difficult is it to change a clutch in a 1JZ with the engine in the car? Will taking the crossmember loose and dropping tranny slightly make it possible to get to the upper bellhousing to engine bolts from under the car? Thanks for any advice.

its possible to do it like that if you have the right tools. i think the hardest part is those two bolts on top but you can probably get to them if you loosen the tranny down and use a swivel socket.

I have done it two different ways. One way is just as you describe. drop the tranny x-member and let the tranny rock the motor back. You can hit the top two bolts with long extensions and flex joints.

The other way that I've been able to do it, and I actually find it easier, is to do this. Un-bolt the tranny from the rear x-member and then jack UP the tail of the tranny, rocking the motor slightly forward. This will open up the clearance between the back of the head and the firewall. Then, you can slip a 17mm wrench down there and get the two top bolts loose.

I've found that rocking it forward and using a wrench is a little easier.

Aside from that, the clutch change is really no different from a 7M car.

I just unbolted the top two bolts with a wrench from above. Wasn't that hard, just time consuming.
I greatly appreciate you guy's advice, jacking the engine up a bit sounds like a good idea, I hadnt thought of that. I wil give it a shot...thanks all who responded...Mike
