I recently found out my 88 supra blew a head gasket, big suprise lol. So I think I want to go the 1jz route. Im sure there are threads on this but I cant find any. Since my supra is pre 89, I know I will need the new motor mounts, but seeing as the crossmember isnt the same as the 89 and above years, what will I have to abut that. I appreciate any advice or links to help me with the swap. Thanks.

I did my swap and opted for the crossmember instead of the motor mounts and it worked out well for my 87.

Well, technically, yeah, it will drop in with just the new mount brackets. You just need a couple hundred bucks worth of other little junk to make it run. Still, it's an easy swap compared to alot of the other engine swaps out there.

Just make sure you buy a rear sump 1jz from a JZA70 supra (or at least from a JZZ30 soarer) so that you don't have to spend another $400-500 on a rear sump oil pan set. Also, the JZZ30 soarer 1JZ has a normal water pump with a viscous fan clutch on it already. The other 1jz motors have hydraulic fans on them, and if it's damaged or missing parts you need to replace it with a whole 2jz water pump, pulley, and fan ($130-200).

Alright cool, yeah I figure I will need a couple hundred more for the random stuff that comes up during the swap. But with the motor mounts for the 88 swap, that will avoid having to swap out crossmembers right? And yes I was told to look for the rear sump jz, so I dont have to deal with that oil pan issue. Thanks for the replies guys.

A couple hundred bucks in other stuff? Where did you get that?

Ps pressure line $100
jz to R154 bellhousing $350
Motor mounts $150
Flywheel $200+
Wiring harness conversion $500+
Custom intercooler piping $300+
Custom exhaust $500+
All of that and you still havent replaced one seal, belt, hose, or fluid.

It is not uncommon to spend well over $5,000 for a STOCK 1jz install.
EDIT:: It is also not uncommon to see the projects parted out, due to someone getting in over their head (both mechanically and financially).

Another thing, if i had to do it again i would get a motor that already had a R154. What i paid for my bellhousing and flywheel would have easily paid for the set. Then youll have an extra trans also.

Yeah, I understand there are the things like that. But I am looking at a jz out of a jza70, with the tranny and uncut wiring harness for 1500. The exhaust wont be a problem, I have the front mount intercooler, and piping. I already planned on a upgrading the clutch and flywheel. And I plan on staying twin for a while too.

Thats a good deal if you can get it. also need the ecu and igniter. Need around 4k to do the swap. How much do you have in your budget?

I know it comes with ecu, Im not sure about igniter. But aside for fluids, plugs and wires, and belts. What is smart to replace while the motor is out? And im not sure if I got the answer in detail but. After I pull the 7M out, and get everything preped to drop the JZ in, being the car a 88, what will I need to drop the motor in? Anything besides the new motor mounts? Thanks. And I'm in no rush to complete the swap, so I figure il have around 3500-4000 for the swap.

nice price for the for the whole set.... if you have the cash for it jump on it but may see if you can do a compression test on it just so you have an idea on the jz's condition.

Yeah, that is a good idea. I'm thinking it will be in decient condition. The guy bought it for a swap that he never started. But who knows.
