hi i am looking at buying a mkIII and was wondering how reliable the 1jz and 2jz are (do they still get bhg often?, etc.) how hard of a swap are each one of them is and how much some of you guys paid for your swaps, how long did it take, etc. Thanks!

i know that i was just wondering if the 1jz had that problem as well

Not really, I mean if you run the 1j without coolant for like a year it might get a bhg, and I've heard of 2jz's getting bhg's every once in a while but you really have to treat them like crap to get one on a jz.

Also, the 1j swap is easier and cheaper. If you have the extra time and or money to go 2j you should probably do it though. My 1j swap cost me about $3k total, but that's for a stock setup and doing all the work myself. Expect to add another 2k or so for a 2j swap.

I found that the pre 89.5 isnt that bad and if i had to do it again, I would go with another pre 89.5. Stronger mounts although you need to use some BIC brackets.

1jz and 2jz both have MHG from the factory, i rarely see one with a bhg...swaping isnt as hard as other cars but you do need to extend the harness and i think(still gathering info myself) change a few wires here and there...oh btw, im blackman from over at njtuners, i saw you post up there in the summer looking for a supra, good luck man!

It all depends how far you want to go. I just paid 5600 for my 2J swap, but that is a supra motor not the aristo so it has the rear sump pan (another thing you need if you buy just a 2J)Manuel ECU and it also has the amazing getrag. But im also building a track/semi street car so it not going to have all the frills of a stock car . some Importers are now selling aristo 2J engines with the 1J bellhousing, rear sump and an R154 for around 3500.

Anything is possible and dont let anyone tell you otherwise. it just depends how much skill/time/money you have, thats where you need to make your decision. But i like the idea of being able to go into a parts store and get something for my 2J in a pinch :)
