86-92 7M 1J 2J Starters will work

IMO Use a 7M Starter, the 1J starters are weak sauce.

When i took my 1J starter it was a hell of alot smaller and weaker then my 7M starter

does the size size dircectly corrilate to whether its "strong" or not? could the smaller one be more efficient or something?

if you have a 2jz one then use that, i belive they are threeds for the bolts and makes it easer to install. to get to the top bolt i useed a socket wrench that bends and put an extension on the handle to make it longer (time to get creative) be patient with it, the bolts are long and take alot of time to get out with little 1/8 turns.

when you install the starter and it does not have threads then use some epoxy or gasket maker to hold the bolts in place, just make sure they are in the perfect spot and let it dry good.

that just dont sound right, i think there must be another problem hidden somewere. look for shorts and burnt wires.
i wouldnt even know where to start. its a 1j swap so the previous owner has a whooooole bunch of wires going everywhere all nicely shrinkwrapped. can see anything.
that, and when i disconnected the wire harness off the starter, everything worked again. so i'm pretty sure it was just a crappy starter

today i'm going to go and get a legit starter that shouldnt have any problems so i'm going to cross my fingers and hope it works

There was two different starter for the 7mgte. A 1988 supra has a big, cheap starter. It will fit a 1jz, but theirs not much room to fit and you have to use longer bolts with nuts. A 1992 supra has a small, cash money starter. It will fit with stock bolts.

I put a 1988 starter on my 1jz, because it was 50 bucks. The 1992 starter was like 160.

If you don't mind paying more i would go with the 1992 starter its not as heavy.

1988 DENSO Part # 2800107
1992 DENSO Part # 2800121

1992 starter is the same as the 1988 starter.
Difference being the 1992 starter has threaded holes just for bolts
1988 is just a hold where a nut and bolt goes thru.

Then you are doing something wrong my friend... My 7M Starter which is currently on my 2J block also fit my 1J block with no issues.

Show pics of how your doing it. I can take a pic but it will be hard to see when the engine in the car.

All the same shit, i have no clue what your doing wrong.

There not the same starter, their different size. I've bot both starters and compared them. Plus there wouldn't be a 110 dollar price jump just because one has threaded holes. The 1992 starter is half the weight of a 1988 starter, I've held both at the same time.

^Correct, difference is weight and size but not by much. The main difference is the solenoid size. My 1j starter is smaller then all 3 of those! Tiny and doesn't have the 1.4kw power. Its alot weaker. Yes the 88 may be a lil bit bigger in size, but i've tried them all and they work. Like all things a little massaging is needed when the motor is in the car BUT with it out it was a piece of cake to install

The stock 1JZ starters are direct driven starters where the 7M and 2J starters are gear reduction. Therefore bigger and more powerful where it counts, against the fly wheel.
