not sure if this is the right section or not, but I have a cressida with a 1J, so I figured this was the spot?

so the car is 98% done.

the only 2% stopping it is the starting problem...
I have the battery on a charger all the time, and it has 12.something volts.
But I go to crank it, and the starter engages but doesn't crank the engine, like what usually happens when you have a dead battery.

the only way to start it is to jump it.

anyone have any comments or concerns on this?
battery is in the trunk and is an optima red top, if that helps any.

Check the voltage at the starter terminal. Make sure you have good clean connections to corrosion. Your battery should have more then or arnound ~13.2VDC If you goto Autozone they will do a freetest on your battery and tell you what your problem is most likely.

When doing remote battery setups you want a battery cable that haves the most fibers or strands like if it is one thick cable with 7 thick wires in it it will suck for DCV because ACV flows current through the whole wire DCV flows current only on the outside of the wire so the more strands of wire in the cable the more current will flow through it. You want to try and get a 0 gauge cable also when doing remote battery.

Somtimes its not always the voltage your battery is putting out but how much current like in cold weather it wont have as high of cranking amperage. Also does the voltage on the battery drop down to nothing when cranking ? short in the starter windings not enough current allowed to flow through the battery?

Not sure what size the wire is, but it was used to run the amplifier in the trunk, and the fibers in it are verrrry fine.

I'll check the voltage at the starter terminal and get back to you.

look up the starter relay mod, sounds like a classic case of an old signal wire

Even tho people argue this is not the "correct" way to fix the problem, this is what I did and it fixed all of my no-starts. It was very annoying. :icon_mad:

yeah, I read through the thread and it sounds like it may be the solution to my problem....

I'm going to try it today as well as trying my 7M starter.
