Hey guys my 1J developed a coolant leak today, just looking for a little input.

I can pour water in the rad and it leaks out just as it sits. It is coming from behind the alternator somewhere. I removed it to try and see what is there but still cannot see the origin. With the alternator out of the way you can see water flowing out in a stream from above it. I am suspecting the water-pump, that sound like a possible culprit? I cant think of anything other than the headgasket that is in the general area.

If it is indeed the water-pump, what are my options? I know I can swap a 2j pump in but than I need a clutch fan and some other stuff... I would like to keep the hydro fan, unless it is crazy expensive to do so.

Ideas, opinions? I am sure it is the waterpump, there shouldn't be anything else leaking like that up there...

Reply definitely appreciated.

So to do that I would need...

2J waterpump + pulley
mk3 fan clutch + fan
Gaskets?

And the option of doing the timing belt while im in there, sound about right?

Sounds about right. Your other option is to get a rebuild 1JZ waterpump from Driftmotion. My water pump is most likely leaking in the same exact place yours is. Mine started to leak 2 weeks ago and it falls onto the back of the alternator. It is coming from the water pump somewhere but I am just too lazy to investigate it right now.

I have been adding water for the meantime until I feel like getting down and dirty again...

I got to work this AM, parked the car and went inside. Noticed steam or something rising up from the hood 5 minutes later. Coolant mess on the ground. Lifted it up on the hoist after work, and as soon as you put water in, it comes right out the bottom. Like there is a steady stream coming out. Damn car.

I believe there is a hose on the bottom of the water pump and when the water pump is not working correctly the coolant will flow through this. Either way time to replace the water pump.

Options:
1) Find a used 1JZ water pump and cross your fingers
2) Get a rebuilt 1JZ water pump from DM
3) 2JZ water pump, pulley, clutch fan and fan
4) 2JZ water pump, pulley and electric fan

For a little update I talked to Mr. Lange whom informed me that he cannot order the part I need. But he did tell me to contact these guys.

They game me an approximate price of $200 for a NEW toyota pump. + approximately $80 in air frieght. I just want to confirm what they are looking at is right etc etc. Will keep this updated.

7M fan clutch won't fit the 2JZ pump.

If you can get a rebuilt hydrofan from DM go for it but just know that a NEW pump is over $900 plus shipping from japan. As for the timing belt, DO IT! it has to come out anyways in order to remove the waterpump so might as well throw a new one in for piece of mind.

Ya the guys I talked to about the waterpump phoned me back today and said that the actual price was 895 ish + freight. So you are correct.

I got the watrepump assy out but I cant seem to locate where the hell it was leaking from :(

On the Tbelt, I have documentation from japan saying it was done 15k - 20k ago and it looks like it. When you are setting up the tensioner though. do you just depress the rod, stick something through it to hole it down, bolt it up than remove what you used to keep the rod down? Is there any "adjustment" necessary?

Thanks guys.

So in theory if a waterpump goes bad it should leak out the weep hole correct? Unless on the rare chance the housing cracks or something stupid like that. Mine definitely was NOT coming out of the weep hole so I am thinking that there might be a bad o-ring or gasket, but everything looks great. This could be fun..

***UPDATE***

LEAK FOUND!!!

The frost plug in the water pump had a very small hole or "tear" in it allowing all of the coolant to evacuate quickly. Too bad I have to wait until wed. or thurs before I can get a new plug in town. But no new WP needed!
