Didn’t hone the bores when putting new rings in, so they didn’t bed in properly. OOPS. Yes yes I know – stupid me.
Anyway – pulled the engine apart – as it turns out number 5 middle ring was upside down also haha.
Two ring landings on number 6 piston crumbled as I was taking the old rings off. BUGGER!
I’ve found a 1GGZE long block and will pick that up this weekend.

The bores are honed this time round :)

Does anyone know, other than compression of the GZE being 8:1 instead of the GTE's 8.5:1, if there is anything else different or better that I should swap over to my engine?

Hunt: Take a good look at your fuel system before running the next motor ring lands are usually Detonation.

The tops of the pistons are fine. On the dyno it wasn't detonating. It actually looks like a bad cast from factory.

Here's a few bad quality pictures of the broken piston:

I come from a land down under
Detonation doesn't always show on the Crowns Hunt :(

(bit of a hint on the pics "use Macro and force flash" ;) )

Looks almost like the motor's been hydrolocked at some stage.

There is a chance it was detonating when I had the VPC in before I got it tuned.....

I only had a phone camera at the time. I'll take some macro ones tonight - altho my flash blows out the picture.
Well i've never had it hydrolocked. Unless somehow skirtloads of oil entered the bores.

Supercharged vs Turbo.

That looks like the rings didn't have enough clearance in the bore, to me!

Did you check your piston ring end gap?

Could very well be an old injury Hunt!

Are the fractures nice clean metal or does some of it look discoloured?

They look a bit dis-coloured - so its an old injury - but I dont know how old.

I did when I put them in. I cant remember what they were. I will check them when I put the GZE pistons in.
Hopefully the GZE pistons have the oil return as drilled holes not slotted like those pistons....

Hunt: Could have happened a LONG time ago :(

Strange thing is I didnt notice anything odd when I changed the rings 2,000km's ago......
But then again I didnt really inspect them properly and I didn't get them crack tested.
So yeah - it could have happened ages ago.

How's this for backwards, the rings were holding the landings in place haha :evil2:

I belive one of the difference's between the GTE and the GZE block are that the big ends on the rods are smaller. Not sure of anything else other than compression.

Yeah. The GZE has smaller big ends I think. Or maybe is the GTE that has smaller - bah i cant remember. I'll find out this weekend tho :p
