I have a Supra that's developing a starter problem.
Sometimes i'll drive up to the corner store and grab a pack of smokes then get back to my car and it won't start. I can press the shift lock over ride button and put it in nueteral and it will sometimes start.
But today,it won't start at all. I can hear the starter relay clicking in the passenger kick panel, but no lowering of voltage(according to my voltmeter) and no starting.
Are there different types (mounting that is) of starters for the Supra?
I've read some posts where it's recommended to take out the bolt from the front of the starter, but mine looks like it has the bolt on the BACK and the housing is threaded.
But more importantly, does this sound like a starter problem at all,or am I barking up the wrong tree?:1zhelp:

Sounds to me like it can be your starter relay. It is located on the passenger side kick panel. It happened to me also, by the way how old is your starter?

I bypassed mine, wired it up straight to the starter using the push button for the headlight squirters. So you need to test it out the starter. What i would do is :

1. Take out the starter and take it to autozone to test. ( Its a PITA taking it out

OR

2. Test out the starter . You need to hook one wire straight to battery and one to the starter signal wire (Ther real thin one). So you got 2 wires that are long enough to touch each other . With some ones help, have someone try to start the car. And if you hear the click click noise YOU touch the 2 WIRES FOR 2-3 SECONDS just enough to turn the engine and start it . If the starter works it wilL turn the engine .

This is just my way to test the starter man, before you start buying a new starter or relays.. good luck

The easy way to check the starter is to remove the battery cable from the starter. Pull the plug from the wiring harness out of the clip, and touch the battery cable to the connector in the starter. If the starter is good, it will spin. No need to try to start the car while under there. And no need to run any wires.

91-92 starters are threaded, and you would very much rather them be that way if you do things by yourself.

In most cases, if you hear the relay clicking, it is good, and you either have a starter or wiring (more common) problem. If the starter spins in the above test, it is good.

This is a band aid to the problem. There is a relay using stock wiring around here somewhere. I believe I write up was written by Idealsupra. If the problem is wiring, you will either want to use that relay, or replace your wiring harness.
